Hi
I live in CT and want to spend one night in NH in Oct....what is the best area to visit for scenic drives? Should we stay near the White Mntns or near Dartmouth? Don%26#39;t know much about the area so any suggestions would be great.
One night in NH
In October it%26#39;s during the high foliage season and to really enjoy it you might want to check out the White Mountains? It%26#39;s up to you and how much driving you want to do. I know that this year I%26#39;m going to do the following drive one way or another, I saw it on this forum and I drove this several years ago and it%26#39;s absolutely breathtaking. Here%26#39;s the route for this ';foliage drive'; it%26#39;s...
North on 135 from Littleton, NH to Bridge St., inLancaster to Rte 2 West then 115A South to Rte 3 South to Franconia North to 93S.
Now Sunapee, Dartmouth area is absolutely beautiful too! So it%26#39;s really up to you on how you want to map it all out! You really have to think of where the ';leaf-peepers'; AREN%26#39;T going to be, you know what I mean? Because you%26#39;ll bump in to way too much traffic if you go the same way as them! That%26#39;s everybody%26#39;s mission up here! You have to try to figure it out on a good day to do this ';jaunt'; too!
Here%26#39;s what%26#39;s written about the Sunapee, Hanover area....
This region of western New Hampshire features the Connecticut River Valley, the busy college town of Hanover and the booming Lebanon, West Lebanon area. You%26#39;ll find history, art and culture here, as well as riverfront property and lakefront property. Lake Sunapee is one of New Hampshire%26#39;s most scenic and popular recreational lakes. The Appalachian Trail traverses through this area. Towns like; Charlestown, Claremont, Newport, Sunapee, Warner, Bradford, New London, Danbury, Orford, Lyme, Andover and Cornish are here.
Take your pick and enjoy! I%26#39;m sure other people will add their input too with some great ideas!
Have fun!

I would vote for the white mountains. Spectacular scenery and foliage. As the previous poster suggested, you%26#39;ll need to decide how much driving you want to do.
The Franconia Noitch area is beautiful, and a straight shot up 93 North, only about 2 hrs out of Boston. There are many outdoor activities, hiking, shorter walks, climbs. If you travel to the village of Franconia you can find some less crowded drives around the Sugar Hill Area or the back side of Mt. Kinsman. Take a look at a map and you%26#39;ll see.
In this area you can%26#39;t go wrong at the Stonybrook Lodge %26amp; Motel or the Gale River Motel and cottages. Check out their reviews on this site.
For breakfast Polly%26#39;s Pancake Parlor, or for dinner I would suggest Govonni%26#39;s in North Woodstock-fabulous Italian with a great overlook of the river.
If you looking for a B%26amp;B, check out the Bungay Jar Inn.
Kangamangus Highway is always a great place to check out for fall colors..
';For breakfast Polly%26#39;s Pancake Parlor';
Avoid by all costs. I%26#39;d rather go to any country inn for breakfast, Franconia Inn, for example.
You are lucky if there is a 20 minute wait. It is more like 40. The place is horribly crowded and noisy. Pancakes are good, but nothing spectacular and once you are seated, it takes another 40 minutes to get your food. Frankly, I would never go there again, that much wait and discomfort is not worth what they are serving.
