We have an offer of a house exchange in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire or Mass. Which state would be best for first timers to New England? We are thinking of exchanging in September.

I would say New Hampshire. Depending on when in September the leaves will be starting to change, plenty of Nature and peace and quiet.
