Romantic Places

I am planning a trip in the first week of Oct to New Hampshire. I want to propose to my girl friend.

I need some ideas of place I can do it. I would like to take a scenic drive through the fall foliage and end up in a seclude spot that over looks a lake or moutain area where we can have a picnic and watch the sun set.

I have no idea if a place like thise even exist but if you know about it I%26#39;d love to hear about it.

I also need places to stay suggestions.

Romantic Places

Are your plans locked into NH or are you open to other New England areas? Another question is are you talking early or late October as it can make a big difference.

Romantic Places

Oops, just noticed that you said 1st week.

Not dead set on NH. Would consider all suggestions. Thanks for the reply!

Suggestions:

New Hampshire

Jackson Village has a great selection of classic New England Inns. Look into Nestlebrook Inn and Christmas Farm Inn and Jackson in general. Just up the hill is a babbling brook and waterfall with wonderful old rocks to climb out on. No view but wonderful, peaceful location.

Also look into The Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods. Just up the road is The Cog to the top of Mt Washington. The view will be great but it will be cold. Clothing for the Gog is layer, layer, layer.

Maine

Look into Camden. It%26#39;s 80-90 miles north of Portland and my favorite long weekend! The are many, many B%26amp;B%26#39;s and Inns and most have great views. Check out the Norbrega Inn. (My spelling may be off.) As for romantic stops the the view from the top of Mt Battie can%26#39;t be beat. (See the Mt Battie photos here on tripadvisor.com that are tied to Glenmoor By The Sea, a nice cabin colony in Camden.)

These are my favotite Northern New England spots.

More on Camden:

There a super 2-3 hour sails on a two masted sloop out of Camden Harbor and they are very well priced. What is more romantic than a sailboat?

We stayed at a great place in the White Mountains of NH during the winter. It%26#39;s called Bear Mountain Lodge in Bethlehem. It%26#39;s a great log Lodge style building and was quite impressive, yet very comfortable and not at all formal. Not your typical B%26amp;B.

Our room (Bear Den) had a king size bed, corner jacuzzi for 2 and a gas fireplace - very romantic. The hosts were very nice, extremely helpful with dinner reservations and info and the food was great. I highly recommend it. The guest book was full of others who seemed to have the same experience.

It%26#39;s close to Franconia Notch State Park and there are lots of places in the area to sit and have picnics. We also have hiked in the past to several of the waterfalls in the area, which would be beautiful in the fall foliage. They had a great website with lots of information.

Good luck with the trip and your engagement.

If you guys are hikers I%26#39;d recommend Mt. Chocura. Nice big summit, great for a picnic and I%26#39;m sure you could find a nice private spot to pop the question. About 2hrs or so to the summit. Not too rugged. No sunsets though, unless you want to hike back in the dark.

If you%26#39;re up for it, the Franconia Rige Loop is a great day hike.

About 8-9 miles, much above treeline. Spectacular scenery. But you won%26#39;t be alone at that time of year. Up Old Bridle Path, down Falling Waters Trail. A serious hike, but well worth it. Mt. Lafayette summit 5,200 ft or so the high point.

Not so much up- the Gem Pool on the Ammonoosuc(sp) Ravine trail about two miles or so and just before it really gets steep on the way to Lakes of the Clouds AMC hut, another mile and half and a fairly steep climb.

Flatter hikes, to Franconia Falls about 3 miles off a trail that is an old logging road.

Zealand Falls at Zealand Hut about 4-5 miles in, but flat except for the last 300 ft or so.

And if you just want to drive somewhere, the back verandah of the Mt. Washington Hotel is pretty spectacular.

Lower Falls on the Kancamangus Highway is nice, too. No hiking required.

Also the Cannon Mt Tram will get you above treeline without having to take a step up, and you can find a nice spot once your there.

As for a place to stay you can%26#39;t go wrong with the Notchland Inn, Route 302 in Hart%26#39;s Location,(Crawford Notch). Pricey but worth every penny. Call ahead and the inkeepers Ed and Les can help you with arrangements. (e.g. they once put a bottle of champagne in the room for me)

Hope this helps. Good luck

Is this supposed to be a surprise?

Anywhere in new england would be nice but if you plan on driving from Baltimore you might want to find a place closer like upstate NY or CT.

I would also recommend York, Maine. Nubble Light is a great spot.
