After much discussion we ( 2 adults 2 kids 8%26amp;10) have decided that after 5 days in Boston (until 5th July) we would like to visit NH.
We are impressed by all the comments on the areas. We enjoy family cycling (not too hilly!), walking but would also like time to recharge our batteries.
We will have 10 days before flying back from Boston. We have booked a car for this time.
Looking at the guide books and maps we are a bit unsure of distances and times to visit areas. Where would be good bases to see mountains/lakes/?sea- don%26#39;t really wont to spend too long in the car so would like ideas on central accom. ? self catering would be quite good. Would we need 2/3/4 bases to see the area?
Thanks for help. Martina

Dundee United!!!!
You may want to look into the Wolfeboro area. It%26#39;s on Lake Winnepesaukee but also a short ride to the White Mountains. IMO, it%26#39;s pretty well located for both lake and mountain activities and is probably 90 north of Boston.
Also, Portsmouth is probably your best bet for the seacoast. It%26#39;s about 60 miles north of Boston and is close to beaches, Maine shopping outlets and is a great seaport city with plenty to do.

Consider getting up into the mountains. CHeck our Glen Trails for off road biking in the Mt. Washington Valley.
Portsmouth NH is a great rea, and very close to the outlet shopping in Kittery Maine. If you have kids with you don%26#39;t miss Yummies. Just a little north of the outlet malls on Rte 1 (on your right if your north bound).
You should definietly plan on at least 2-3 bases for your exploring. That wat you could have time in the mountains, the lakes, and the coast.
Distances are not great, but travelling east-west is slower than the North South highways. You can be in the heart of the White Mountains in about 2 hours if you travel north on Rte 93 out of Boston.
How about a coastal drive - heading north from Boston with Bar Harbor, Maine as the destination? Bar Harbor is home to Acadia National Park... the oldest in the US. On the way, you%26#39;d pass a variety of small coastal town, including the beaches of New Hampshire, the shopping in Freeport (much nicer than Kittery, I think, though you%26#39;d go through Kittery, too), the scenic towns of York beach, Kennebunkport (KenneBUSHport to some), Ogunquit and Boothbay Harbor. The drive can be done in about 6 hours each way, but along the way, there are many small, independent motels and guest houses if you wanted to stretch it out over a couple days.
If you%26#39;re so inclined, there are even ferries that make frequent trips to Nova Scotia.
For lakes and mountains, you could make a detour of about an hour west of Portsmouth New Hampshire and be in Alton Bay at the southern end of Lake Winnepesaukee, which would put you easily within 3 hours of Logan airport.
White Mountains is about two hours from Boston, MA. There is a great (little bit hilly) bike trail (about 13 miles one way) in the Franconia Notch area of NH.
Or check out the lakes region at Lake Winnepasaukee.
Or skip NH, and head up to Maine along the coast and visit Acadia National Park. It is beautiful area, and you can stop at Freeport and visit LL Bean on the way!
Hello Marina!
I tried to figure out a way to email privately but couldnt. I too am planning a New England trip, in October though.
I have an 8 year old as well (a girl) who would love a penpal. If you think your 8 or 10 year old may be interested, let me know. We live in California.

I thought I%26#39;d pass this along to you for help. There is a great NH map booklet that would help you to have the most scenic vacation.
The company makes one booklet for each state in NE and there are 7 back road routes mapped out for each.
Each map card gives you scenic back road routes with a map on one side and turn by turn directions on the other side.
These are awesome b/c each map lists the attractions you will pass on each route.
In the back of each booklet is the phone number to the attractions in case you want to visit on a whim and need more info.
I purchased mine on line at www.moto-maps.com.
Thank you for your help. It has been great. Can anyone change the 10 day forecast for Boston? Looks like ';showers'; until we leave on 5th July!!
Looking forward to NH. Any idea where you can purchase the road maps locally,- not enough time to ship to UK?
Debra- I also have an 8 year old daughter who would like a pen pal- an avid letter writer!
I will email you directly on return from NH.

hey there scotsonholiday, i would see if you can email moto-maps from their website to see where you can pick these up locally while you%26#39;re out here.
hope you have a great trip
Any decent sized book store in Boston will have maps of New Hampshire. Barnes and Noble book store is a large chain store in the area (for one example). If you want to wait until you get to New Hampshire, you will most likely be taking highway 93 north into New Hampshire. A short distance into the state, there is a rest stop/ tourist information center (right on the highway). You should find free maps and travel brochures there.
By the way... most major inter-state highways in the area (not just New Hampshire) will have rest areas with free tourist maps. etc.
Have a great trip!
