Any good inexpensive motels along the way to leafpeeping?

We%26#39;re planning on going to New England and see New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Cape Code, Boston and more in late September. Hopefully do some ';leafpeeping'; and see as much as we can in ten days. One of the places I can%26#39;t wait to see is where they filmed ';On the Golden Pond'; and ';How about Bob';. Is that same house from the movie still there by the way ? To keep this trip within budget. We%26#39;re thinking of splurging on a nice hotel some nights and take into a cheaper motel along the way in other places. Any good recommendations and are there still inexpensive motels (motel 6) along this way since it%26#39;s such a ';touristy roadtrip';?

Good morning Schnookies,

Squam Lake in Holderness, NH in the Lakes region is where the movie ';On Golden Pond'; was filmed. Even though the story line has it as the state of Maine were Golden Pond is located? It was actually at Squam Lake right in New Hampshire.

You might want to think about a boat cruise with Captain Joe along Squam Lake. It%26#39;s one of the best tours in New Hampshire as a matter of fact. He%26#39;ll show you Thayer Cottage, Purgatory Cove and where the 3 Hollywood stars performed. Go to this site to read more about it:

There%26#39;s the Squam Lake Inn that would be very nice to stay here for a few nights. IF you can get reservations that%26#39;s the tough part! You might want to call as soon as possible:

See if you can get reservations at the Yankee Trail Motel in Holderness, NH right near Squam Lake...it%26#39;s got a really good restaurant here and the most incredible quilting shop is also right down the road from here.

The movie ';How About Bob'; was supposedly filmed in Hollywood, they used all the New Hampshire police uniforms, cars and props and filmed it all out there???

YES there are a lot of inexpensive motels up through the area you%26#39;re heading to this Fall. The problem though is during leafpeeping season, it gets really really crowded, so you might want to make reservations at a few places, that way you%26#39;ll know, you%26#39;re all set with rooms.

Good luck and have a wonderful time leafpeeping! It%26#39;ll be here before we know it!

Thanks for your informative reply! That tour sounds very interesting. I will definitely look into that. I%26#39;m so disappointed about ';What about Bob';....they didn%26#39;t film it at all up there? What do you expect...it%26#39;s Hollywood:-)

I agree with the above recommendations. ';What about Bob'; was actually filmed in the Carolinas. The mountain backgrounds were similar to Lake Winnepesaukee, where the good doctor summered.

If you in the Boston Area go visit Concord Mass. Since you seem to be a movie buff at least two movies have been partially filmed there. School Ties (Brandon Fraser and Chris O%26#39;Donnell)was filmed at the Middlesex School and Housesitter with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. The Colonial Inn in Concord was used as was the house directly behind it. Also several scenes were shot throughout town. The town has some incredible historic sights as well. visit www.concordscolonialinn.com.

For your less expensive nights you might try some place in Concord like the Fairfield (Marriott) - I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s as ';vacation oriented'; so the prices might not be as foliage-influenced and you can certainly get the prices online. And you%26#39;re only an hour from the White Mountains and a little over half an hour from Squam - plus there are fun, reasonably priced restaurants in Concord, and it is the state capitol - there is a museum of NH History, and the state capitol building has some patriotic/historic displays (battle flags, very moving.)
