We are planning to visit New Hampshire this Oct and don%26#39;t know which area would be the better location for fall foliage day trips. Or are there better areas to stay. This is our first time to New England and need some recommendations.
Jackson or Franconia
We%26#39;ve been travelling to New Hampshire every year for vacations - all four seasons. We%26#39;ve stayed in both North Conway and the Franconia area. North Conway tends to be more crowded due to the outlets. The main road through town gets quite congested and we%26#39;ve actually sat for more than an hour to go about 5 miles. The other side of the White Mountains, the Franconia area is just gorgeous. It%26#39;s more unspoiled and not as commercial as North Conway. There aren%26#39;t any areas that are as congested as North Conway but just as many beautiful places to stay and eat. There is also some nice shopping but not to the extent as Conway - if you%26#39;re going to shop that%26#39;s the place to be. If you%26#39;re looking for a relaxing, quiet vacation with spectacular views, then head to the Franconia area. It%26#39;s only minutes to Franconia Notch Park. The quaint Town of Littleton is close as well.
We would recommend you check out the website for The Bear Mountain Lodge. We stayed there this past winter and it was incredible. It%26#39;s a new log Lodge building, very unique opened last year. The owners are very friendly, the rooms are beautiful and the food was great. We highly recommend it and have actually sent family there. It%26#39;s just a great new place to stay in the area.
Have a great trip.
Jackson or Franconia
Jackson is a quaint New England village nestled close to Mt Washington. It has charming b%26amp;b%26#39;s, elegant inn%26#39;s and great restaurants to choose from depending on your preference.(also has a great Irish pub) It is much smaller than the Conway or Franconia area and might give you a better flavor of an older New England. You will be closer to Maine in the event you want to take advantage of the foliage there. Either area is great and you should see both. Places tend to book early for the first two weeks in Oct so plan accordingly. If you decide to stay in Jackson, the Carter Notch Inn, Inn at Jackson, Wentworth and Inn at Thorn Hill are worth staying at. Check out www.jacksonnh.com for info.
Also, if you do drive through Conway. take either West Side Rd or the North - South Rd ( both parallel Rt 16)and you won%26#39;t wait in traffic.
Enjoy
