Greetings! We moved to SE Connecticut almost 3 years ago and love it...except we hate being here for the 4th of July. Any ideas for a quiet, relaxing spot in New Hampshire where we could spend the 4th? We have 2 young children, so we need a family friendly spot. We%26#39;re open to anything: hotel, b%26amp;b, camping, etc. We just don%26#39;t want to be around here for the holiday this year--it%26#39;s too loud and crowded. Thank you!
Quiet spot for 4th of July?
Good morning Kanathos!
This is also answered by me on your posted question in the MASS forum...
If you go to the MAINE Forum and post your question I know you%26#39;ll get a lot of great suggestions and ideas there.
SE Connecticut is loud and crowded? I can%26#39;t believe it, we always used to think CONN. was quiet and SO SO rural when we visited my sisters In-laws; also SO nice and peaceful! So it sounds like it%26#39;s getting a little out of hand then in that State, shoo them all away will you!
Maine is getting PACKED these days too you know! When you drive a long the Maine Turnpike during the summer months, especially from NH in to MAINE? The traffic at certain times is totally and I mean totally outrageous. It%26#39;s getting as bad if not worse than Cape Cod and I%26#39;m not kidding you! Just remember to time it right when you do head up there and I%26#39;m serious about it! You would NOT believe it from like Portsmouth, NH in to the beginning of MAINE during certain times, especially during the summer months, it%26#39;s getting worse than ever. For instance, on a Friday night and a Saturday morning? Forget about it! Try to travel completely opposite of these times when you head up, you%26#39;ll see what I mean if you don%26#39;t! It%26#39;s completely brutal now with traffic along the beginning of that Maine Turnpike. It%26#39;s as bad as the Sagamore Bridge tie ups on olde Cape Cod.
Here%26#39;s a couple of good sites to check out:
www.explorenewengland.com
It%26#39;s affiliated with the Boston Globe and lists events and attractions in all the different regions of New England. It%26#39;s a great site to have and to check out from time to time! With you, just click on Maine and it%26#39;ll list the various regions around the state to visit.
Check out the articles on Kezar Lake while you%26#39;re at it, I LOVE that place! It%26#39;s located in the Fryeburg, Maine area in the White Mountains; not too far from Conway, NH at all. It%26#39;s SO pretty here and it USED to be nice and quite, whether it is NOW or not is another story!
I%26#39;m sure people that see your post will have some other great suggestions and ideas for you as well, so keep checking back here from time to time.
This site is GREAT:

Also here%26#39;s about the Kezar Lake area I was telling you about, you can read all about it right now:
mainevacation.com/regions/Kezar-Lake-Maine.h…
Another area is Camden, Maine. It looks so beautiful, but I really think it%26#39;s getting out of hand these days with the over population we%26#39;re having these days! Especially in the summer months with the crowds. I think if I were going here? I%26#39;d go during the opposite seasons from every one else! You can always check it out though to see what you think. I know there%26#39;s a lot going on and a lot to see here just the same, Maine%26#39;s coast is SO gorgeous, it would be a much further drive than the Fryeburg area though, so it%26#39;s up to you on where you want to be and how much driving you want to do from CONN. with your family.
Check these sites out anyway and have a great summer!
Quiet spot for 4th of July?
Hi,
If you%26#39;re looking for quiet try Rangeley, ME. One particular spot we like is the Rangeley Inn.
http://www.rangeleyinn.com/
This is in the extreme NW corner of ME. It%26#39;s amybe 35 miles to NH border and also about the same or a little more to the Quebec border. Rangeley sits on a very pretty lake and is a kick back to Old New England of the 50s/60s. You can walk nearly everywhere in town. On an early morn of before dusk drive up the road towards Canada I you can expect to see several moose along the way. Drive careful though as they are strange creatures and jump out at unexpected times.
To get to Rangeley drive up Rt 93 through NH then cut across on any East West road to get to Rt 16 and follow that past Berlin and to Errol, NH. There you head West to ME and Rangeley. The drive from Berlin to Errol goes through what NH calls the Great North Woods, again moose country. It%26#39;s a beautiful drive from Berlin, NH all the way to Rangeley, ME.
This is about the quietest area that is still very pretty and also purely non touristy.
Thank you both for your suggestions. I really appreciate them. We are looking all over New England for something quiet to do for the holiday weekend. The information about traffic is particularly helpful because our baby can%26#39;t stand being in the car for long. It would be awful to be stuck in traffic. Take care!
Another great spot is around the Franconia,Sugar Hill, littleton area. Franconia Notch is great for hiking or just taking a walk viewing the views of the nationalpark. Great Inn close by is the Ammonoosuc Inn (www.ammonoosucinn.com)it has 2 onsite restaurans and is on a golf course. Great quiet location to relax after a day of sightseeing
