We have 3 little kids, ages 3 and 4, want to go to the Lakes Region. Not sure which town to stay in. We live in NJ, so dont want to ';recreate'; the crowded feeling, but also dont want to be too remote.
Some of the things we%26#39;d like to do would be the scenic cruises, the train rides for the kids, etc. Maybe some very lite nature walking.
Weir beach appears to be a very crowded place, I don%26#39;t really want to vacation in a high traffic area.
Thank youl
Lakes Region/winnipesaukee? Suggestions?
I noticed you did not mention when you are going to visit. I will assume for my reply that it is the summer. Quiet areas of the big lake are Center Harbor, Tuftonboro, Moultonboro, and Wolfboro. This also means that you will further away from a lot of kids stuff which is centered around Weirs Beach.
You might consider the Squam Lakes region which would be quiet, an easier drive to get to some of the kids stuff and also close to some nice hiking trails.
Plymouth NH is also a quiet town, home to Plymouth State University and is right on I-93 which would provide nice access to both the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. There is no traffic like New Jersey on this highway.
Another area is the Lincoln/Woodstock area which can be a little crowded but has plenty for the kids to do, hiking and is only an hour from Weirs Beach.

Lakes Region/winnipesaukee? Suggestions?
Thanks.
Ha, i am a sox fan in NJ! They need some pitching help.
I am going up to Killington to visit a brother, then driving over to NH, July 4 week. What I want to do is get a good taste of the Lakes Region. I have been to Mt. Washington, Franconia Notch a few years back.
I am also interested in Storyland for my little kids. I realize that is a decent drive from the lakes region.
Good morning Jdkpa,
You%26#39;d really like the cruise on the big Lake, it%26#39;s well worth it, you can read about it here. There%26#39;s the Mt. Washington boat ride as well as the smaller boats like the Sophie C which is actually the Lake%26#39;s mailboat and as it%26#39;s delivering mailbags to the different islands on the lake you%26#39;re hearing different neat stories about each island out there and also a little history of the Lake and the various islands and the people that live on them, it%26#39;s pretty entertaining. You can view the following site to see what time they leave and also the most important thing is where each boat leaves from:

B Mae%26#39;s Resort is in Guilford and I know you%26#39;d really like it here with your family. It%26#39;s in a really good location for the different attractions in the Lakes region, plus it%26#39;s got a pool and it%26#39;s kid friendly. Go to this site so you can review it when you get the chance:
www.BMaesResort.com
I realize you%26#39;re not interested in anything near Weir%26#39;s Beach but I just wanted to make sure you knew that this past week was Bike Week and once all the biker visitors leave? It%26#39;s back to being quiet again, honest! It%26#39;s got a great penny arcade, a family fun center, cute little shops to explore that the kids would really like, a great boardwalk and the fireworks display is very good over the lake . You can view it online, you know you can always head to Weirs during the day from B%26#39;Mae%26#39;s Resort in Guilford it%26#39;s not far at all:
www.weirsbeach.com/topten/reason4.html
If you absolutely have to have peace and quiet? Then think about heading to Newfound Lake and check out the kid friendly B%26amp;B that I spotted online just now! It looks out of this world on their site; it%26#39;s called ';The Meadowwind B%26amp;B';. I%26#39;m not familiar with this area because I always head to the Moultonboro area at the Lake, but I%26#39;ll tell you, this B%26amp;B looks QUITE nice and very reasonable to stay here a night so check it out when you get the chance:

Storyland is in Glen, N.H. right on rte 16 in the White Mountains and their site has some very good lodging suggestions. I%26#39;ve only done day trips from the seacoast of NH to Storyland, I never actually stayed in the area for it, but I%26#39;m sure you will find a wonderful place to stay at with your family. There certainly are quite a lot of choices for this great region:

Keep checking back from time to time, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll get some other ideas and suggestions as well.
Have a great time with your family!
Thanks.
What is the nicest place to stay in/near Weirs beach?
Hi Jdkpa,
To me, one of the nicest Resorts on the big Lake is the Inn at Mill Falls in Meredith, NH. B%26#39;Mae%26#39;s Resort in Guilford is pretty convenient and a little less pricier then this Inn of course. It%26#39;s up to you and what your budget is for your vacation.
You%26#39;d still be able to get to Weirs Beach area in no time from either resort and it%26#39;s also a very beautiful scenic drive from Weirs to Alton Bay as well along this stretch of road. Check this site out below and also click on ';area attractions'; on this site to see the different other sites with the areas various attractions in this whole region:

Have a great time~
Winnipesaukee is my favorite summer vacation place. Here%26#39;s a few suggestion for where to stay... they all have websites, just go to Google to find them. The Channel Cottages in Weirs Beach... just around the corner from the Weirs... small cottages directly on the water, small beach, and easy walking distance to the attractions at Weirs. Cottages have cooking facilities, etc. Good for kids. Another place would be Silver Sands in Gilford... just a few miles from the Weirs... has a beach, pool, some efficiency rooms, etc.... and just next door is White Sands... also very nice. These would be quiet but not far from the action for the kids.
If you plan to stay for a week or more, try Preferred Vacation Properties. Best website for rentals. Not sure I%26#39;d want to stay at the Weirs. Noisy, honky-tonky atmosphere. Nicer towns are Meredith, Center Harbor, Moultonboro, Wolfboro. Lots to do at the lake. Scenic boat rides, the Winnipesaukee railroad takes you along the lake from Meredith to Gilford and back, Funspot and lots more. Be sure to take the kids to Hart%26#39;s Turkey Farm Restaurant in Meredith. They%26#39;ll love it. Thanksgiving in July. For lots more info, try www.winnipesaukee.com.
Have a great time. I love the lake and have been going there for 25 years.

Extra parking spaces, outdoor pool, tennis courts, indoor activities center with full size pool, waterslides, Roman Hot Water Spa, 2 decks, vending machines, indoor racketball court, changing rooms, lockers and showers, 2 saunas, game room and pool table, outdoor boat and trailer storage, video rental, planned children%26#39;s activites, etc., etc. Five to ten minutes drive to supermarkets, Lake WInni., and Weirs and movie theaters. I just found a place - Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. I have a 4 year old and someone at the Fish and Game Dept. told me that she would love it! There are all sorts of animals including a bear and bobcat. Light hiking.
