We are looking for a pla ce to take a 10 y.o. boy camping so he has the experience to remember as he grows. Would like an area were there are some short hikes and wildlife viewing. Planning on the last week of June.
primative type camping within 25 miles of bartlett
There are a lot of choices in the White Mountain National Forest. If you want to stay close to Bartlet, try Dry River Campground, for tailgate camping.(nhparks.state.nh.us/ParksPages/campgrndsHome). This is a very atractive wooded site with very basic facilities. It is close to Crawford Notch, and plenty of day hikes, including Arethusa Falls. If you are interested in backpacking, there are a number of backcountry sites where you will have an even better chance at viewing some wildlife. The Nancy Ponds scenic area is worthwhile, along with the tent platforms at Ethan Pond. (Not a bad hike from Zealand Falls Parking lot),
You can get a lot of great information from The Appalachian Mountain Club. Be sure to pick up their guide to the White Mountains, which includes topographical maps for the area. (www.outdoors.org)
Let me know what type of camping experince you are looking for, I may be able to give you some more suggestions.
