My girlfriend and I are visiting Canada and the US from the UK on honeymoon in early October and are planning to drive from Montreal to Boston, but would like to stay 3-4 days in either the White or Green Mountains.
We%26#39;re keen to find a pretty little town that has a good selection of bars and places to eat, but could also act as a good base to go out and explore the area for a few days, with a few drives or walks in beautiful countryside.
Franconia and\or Stowe seem to be the most popular recommendations so far, but in terms of stunning scenery and places to visit, are we better in the White Mountains of NH or the Green Mountains of Vt?
Any suggestions much appreciated, thanks Alex
White Mountains or Green Mountains?!
Hi Ross71,
From your drive down from Montreal you could actually do either State very easily. If you decide on Vermont you could check out Killington or Stowe; both very pretty towns and things going on all year round, not necessarily just in the winter months with their skiing.
You%26#39;d be there during the Foliage season in early October so you%26#39;d have to make reservations as soon as you decide for either of these states; as it%26#39;s quite crowded with the leaf peepers!
You could check out this site for Vermont for different ideas:

I saw a really pretty Inn that is in southern Vermont that you could drive to? It%26#39;s in a town called Wilmington and it looks perfect for a honeymoon get away to tell you the truth! You can read and view it yourself to decide:
www.nutmeginn.com
In Stowe, Vermont there%26#39;s an Inn called the Timberholm Country B%26amp;B Inn. You can check it out:
www.timberholm.com
If you do decide to drive further on to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, then look for the Carter Notch Inn in Jackson and see if you can get reservations here, you%26#39;d love it here as well! Another one that is very pretty is the Kearsage Inn in No. Conway, NH. You%26#39;d have a lot to see and do in both the Green or the White Mountains as far as hiking, biking, leaf peeping, scenic drives, shopping %26amp; restaurants. It all depends on what town and state you want to be in.
That Nutmeg Inn in Wilmington, VT. sounds SO beautiful, and it looks GREAT online, you%26#39;d both have to decide if that%26#39;s where you want to drive to! I%26#39;d be curious about that one myself, I bet it would be wonderful there!
You have a few choices here now. Good luck and BEST WISHES with your upcoming wedding plans. Enjoy your get away no matter where you stay!
White Mountains or Green Mountains?!
If you do decide on NH%26#39;s White Mountains and if you could actually get the reservations at the Carter Notch Inn in Jackson, I forgot to tell you that the Innkeepers are originally from the UK so this would be ideal for you. It%26#39;s pretty popular though, so if I were you and you do decide to stay here, make the reservations as soon as you can. A lot of these Inns book up pretty quick and people make their reservations months ahead of time.
ross71,
VT and NH are very similar in some wayts and very different in others. VT mountains are lower and greener tan those in NH that tend to be rockier and a higher. With 3 to 4 days to spend you should be able to do a little of both states. One suggestion I have is why not stay somewhere that%26#39;s convenient to both NH %26amp; VT. Woodstock, VT fills this bill as it%26#39;s just in from the NH line. Woodstock is a picture book small town with a world class inn, The Woodstock Inn.

From there you can take day trips to most northern NH %26amp; VT areas.
From Boston to Monteal you will travel Interstate 93 north and go right into Littleton, which was voted one of the 10 best towns in the US to visit. it is just North of the Franconia Notch, which is a truly beautiful part of the State of NH. We stayed at the Ammonoosuc Inn - www.ammonoosucinn.com which is 6 miles from interstate 93 - The Inn has two full service restaurants and a full service bar.It is also in the middle of a golf course. Fantastic rooms, outstanding food, since it is owned by a chef (also from the UK). I suggest you book quickly, since all of the Inns in NH are usually very full at that time of year. This one is usually booked months in advance because of it%26#39;s views as well as being on a golf course. I know you%26#39;ll enjoy the area no matter where you stay, fall foliage is beautiful in either state
If you%26#39;re considering the White Mountains, try the Bear Mountain Lodge in Bethlehem. We stayed there this past winter and it was amazing. It%26#39;s a log Lodge style building, something very unique to the area - the logs were huge like something you%26#39;d see out West.
The rooms were beauitful, the beds soo comfortable and the food was great. They don%26#39;t have an on-site restaurant but there are some in the area they referred us to that are really good. The breakfast was awesome and filling so we usually didn%26#39;t need to have more than a snack for lunch.
The innkeepers are very nice, informative and helpful. They made our dinner reservations each night and helped us plan our days events. Highly recommend.
