New England trip Oct. 23nd

Hi all,

I planned to visit NH, Vermont for 4 days starting from Oct. 23rd. We will be flying into Manchester, NH. With the current flooding and heavy rain, I would like to get some ideas of what to do

1. Are most of the roads undriveable esp. the Kancamagus Scenic drive?

2. If NH and Vermont weather are too bad that I can%26#39;t enjoy fall foliage, is changing to visiting Massachuset (Boston) a good alternative?

Thanks for your help.

New England trip Oct. 23nd

Hello CMH95,

Well it was pretty bad yesterday around here; they had a terrible mudslide over along the Kancamangus Highway, but by later on in the day they had it pretty well taken care of according to the news last night. You might want to read the local news as far as the rest of the area? Because it%26#39;s even pretty bad down in MASS from what we%26#39;re hearing with all this flooding.

The Worcester, Framingham, Southbridge, Brockton areas and even down in Cranston, RI as well got hit with all this. In NH the Keene area and the Laconia area of NH got hit again, I feel so bad for all those people with what they%26#39;re all going through! Last night on the news they said well over 7 counties in NH got hit with high winds and flooding.

All I can tell you to do right now, is to read online in the next couple of days

at www.wmur.com for NH and also this site for the Greater Boston news down in MA

www.thebostonchannel.com

We%26#39;ve also been reading the Boston Globe online at www.boston.com which is giving us information. Gov. Romney declared a state of emergency down in MA so it doesn%26#39;t look good with this situation as of today.

As far as the foliage is concerned in NH? I don%26#39;t know about the rest of the State of NH right now; but with us on the Seacoast area I think it%26#39;s a washout this year with beautiful foliage! Unless today it changes with the sun that%26#39;s peeking out right now! We have to be optimistic! Hopefully it changes over the next several days; which it still could!

You still have a few days to make your decision! May be you could still see NH and VT some how; keep checking online or may be you might just want to head for Boston if it doesn%26#39;t look good in your mind, it%26#39;s your call!

The sun came out today for the first time in over a week! Also the temperature has dropped, and that should bring out the foliage. As NoMo has stated, it is not a banner year for foliage, it%26#39;s just been too darn warm out for the leaves to change - but at least the rain is gone.

The major flooding has been along those river valleys in the areas NoMo listed. Boston is fine, and it%26#39;s a great time of year to visit. There should be no remaining problems from this week%26#39;s weather.

The mountains in NH %26amp; VT are still beautiful, with some color remaining as the season was late. The scenery is always stunning, all four seasons. CHeck with local sources for foliage conditions, and good luck!

Thank-you very much NoMo01 and Northbound for your quick responses.

I checked the local website and things look bad. I will continue to monitor the news in the next few days. If I have to cancel, I have to convince the United Airlines to let me change tickets without charging me $100 ticket fee change. Ouch!

Thanks again! This site is great with so many helpful and knowledgeable people.

The gusty winds across New England didn%26#39;t help out the foliage situation either. Anyway, with you arriving NEXT Sunday the 23rd, the ';peak'; foliage will have definitely passed much of the north country. Southernmost VT/NH and pushing down into MA will likely be where you%26#39;ll find the best color.

I wouldn%26#39;t fret too much over the flooding situations. I mean, sure, it%26#39;s a severe situation, but it%26#39;s not like ALL of southern VT/NH and western/central MA are under 5-10 feet of water. It%26#39;s around certain local rivers, for the most part.

We decided to cancel our NE trip since it was raining (according to weather.com) the 4 days we planned to be there.

We switched plan to going to Yosemite instead and it was the right decision. THANKS all for your help. We definitely will try to visit NE in the fall in the future.
