My son is a train enthusiast, so I am thinking about booking a trip to NH to ride on the cog railroad. I am trying to figure out when would be the best time to come. The autumn foliage sounds tempting, but probably very crowded time to visit, what with the appeal of leaves combined with the nearby fair. Would it be better to wait until winter, and try to combine the visit with teaching him to downhill ski? Can you learn to downhill ski in this area?

We stayed in Jackson last Oct. for the foliage season and it was awesome. The Mt. Washington area is absolutely beautiful. Depending on how old your son is might determine if you should do the cog railroad (might be kind of scarey for young kids). We did not do the cog, instead we took the guided drive up Mt. Washington. That was fantastic. The view from the top is breathtaking. I would highly recommend the Inn at Ellis River if your looking for a place to stay. Usually the second week of October is the best time for the foliage. We will definately be returning to the Jackson area.
