My son is a train enthusiast, so I am thinking about booking a trip to NH to ride on the cog railroad. I am trying to figure out when would be the best time to come. The autumn foliage sounds tempting, but probably very crowded time to visit, what with the appeal of leaves combined with the nearby fair. Would it be better to wait until winter, and try to combine the visit with teaching him to downhill ski? Can you learn to downhill ski in this area?
Cog rail - autumn visit, or skiing from the train -- Mt...
hello
I would go to Mount Washington in the winter - It%26#39;s gorgeous all year round, no doubt, but it is something special in the winter. The Mt Washington itself is fab and they have the skiing right across the road at Bretton Woods - you can stay at Bretton Woods, at the Mt. Washington hotel itself (expensive) or they have a gorgouse Mt. Washington Lodge (this is where I stay when I go there). You can ski downhill at Bretton Woods - they have all kinds of trails. There is also Attitash, which is on the way to North Conway from Mt. Wash (about 40 miles to North Conway I think). This is bigger and more popular than Bretton Woods.
It is like heaven when the leaves are there - the colours are colours that you don%26#39;t even know exist until you see them. The tourists come from every state to have a look at them (the local people call them flatlanders, but not in a bad way). There is a big influx of tourists during leaf season.
When I say in North Conway I stay at Eastern Slopes - I love it so much - it is really cosy and woody, and Christmassy - not modern like a newly build hotel but just fantastic - they have a place called Flatbread attached for lovely pizzas and the bar is like heaven - lovely big open fireplaces.
North Conway is fantastic and there are tons of places to stay.
You might think it weird you getting a post from Ireland re. USA, but I went to visit the white mountains a few years back, and I ended up staying up there for four years. (Whitefield and Littleton) - I still go there every year cause I love it so much.
Hope this was a bit helpful to you.
