Best time to see Fall Foliage?

Hello everyone,

My husband and I just moved a reservation for North Conway from September 23 to September 30th because we heard that the leaves in White Mountains haven%26#39;t even begun to turn. Does anyone know if this is true? We want to go there when the leaves turn but, of course, there is no way of knowing when this will exactly be : ) We figured we%26#39;d give it another week and hopefully some color will show.

Best time to see Fall Foliage?

Hello Darlene, You%26#39;re right, the leaves in the White Mountains haven%26#39;t even begun to turn yet. With the foliage around here, it all starts up through the North Country first then it heads to us on the Seacoast or NH; then down through Massachusetts

and every where else! It%26#39;s like our magic marker!

We have a huge maple out in the yard and the leaves have been falling off for quite a few weeks now, the leaves on the ground are as dry as can be and they%26#39;ve been falling off

since the end of August, we thought it was way too early so we went over to ';Agway'; to ask them (where we go with questions like this a lot because we%26#39;re from the City and are clueless and they%26#39;re wonderful with our questions all the time---so patient!)

They said the leaves are falling so early this year because of the dryness we%26#39;ve had and also it%26#39;s to show us what a long winter we%26#39;re going to have and with this ';RAINLESS SEASON';

around here in so long? Everything is dry! The grass, the trees, the plants, Everything, it%26#39;s incredible what it%26#39;s been doing and

every one is complaining about it that we talk to. All of our lawns looked so beautiful this past Spring and now the yards look like hay!

You%26#39;re taking a gamble; but I%26#39;ll tell you, moving your date to the 30th will be a lot better than a week from this friday (the 23rd). You were right giving it another week, you%26#39;ll be better off! By the time the foliage hits through the White Mountains it%26#39;ll be in around the 30th and the 1st of October. Keep your fingers crossed, the foliage is always so different every year, we have a tree on our road that is the first one around here to change and it%26#39;s starting a tiny bit on the top, that%26#39;s one of our signs around the seacoast of NH, so that means it%26#39;s a few more weeks to go! Enjoy it and Have Fun!

Best time to see Fall Foliage?

This puts you in North Conway the weekend before Columbus Day weekend. On average, you should see some color in the valley. It%26#39;s not as though everything is going to be green or bare. Worst case, you take a nice drive a bit farther north. Make a loop around the Presidential range....Rt 302 west towards Bretton Woods to Rt. 2 east across the northern stretch of the Presidentials and then back down Rt. 16 from Goreham into Jackson/North Conway. If it%26#39;s not too cloudy, then you%26#39;ll get beautiful views of Mt. Washington%26#39;s east and west sides.

Trees in low lying areas, swamps, valleys, are the first to turn since cold air sinks into these depressions. Maples are amoung the earliest to turn with their bright red foliage. Foliage can be beautiful from the first stray branches in early Sept., %26#39;til the last brown oak leaves hanging on in November. Your sure to catch some pockets of color, especially if you take a loop up north.

Thanks, everyone, for responding to my message. I appreciate your advice.

Hello DarleneT again,

Go in to this site....

http://foliage.visitnh.gov/index-flash.html

I just found it.....it%26#39;s got the map of the state of NH on it and you drag the leaf w/your mouse over each area of the state and it%26#39;ll show you the parts of the state that are filled with fall foliage by the colors and the dates above along the top of the site....check it out, I thought it was such a great idea!
