I%26#39;m planning to visit Mount Washington in the end of August from a Friday to a Monday. I was wondering what campgrounds would afford the best amenities (price, close to mountain, and scenery)? I have stayed at the Crawford Notch Campsite already. Thanks.
Mount Washington Campgrounds
I%26#39;ve got one for you to avoid. Timberland Campground in Gorham, NH. This campground was nice enough, but it had a noise problem. The main road it is on is by a hill with a rest area near by. The sites closest to the road hear trucks climbing the hill or down shifting through out the night. It sounded like a number of trucks stopped at the nearby rest area and let their engines run all night.
On the side of the campground away from the main road are railroad tracks! The train came through about 11 pm if I remember correctly... sounded like our tent was sitting on the tracks! Didn%26#39;t get a lot of sleep that week, but have many funny stories to tell afterwards!
Mount Washington Campgrounds
Dolly Copp is a great campground. It is a WMNF campground and the rate is $16.00 per night. Quite a few of the sights are reservable through reserveamerica. They do save some for first come, first serve. We were there 4th of July weekend, and it was full only one of the 5 nights we were there, so you shouldn%26#39;t have a problem with occupancy. We are tent campers, so I don%26#39;t know if they have hook ups. The campground is located just south of Gorham on 16, and just north of Pinkham Notch. Its a great place if you plan to hike Mt. Washington or go up the auto road. It is right along the river and there is great swimming in the brook. Its almost like a natural water slide. They have flush toilets, but no showers. Showers are available at the Pinkham Notch camp down the road. Its a bit of an inconvenience but managable. The sites are very nice and most are quite large. Have a great time at Mt. Washington!!
