We plan to drive from Boston, MA to Greenwich, CT in the second week of September. We are two young couples from Australia with no children and have never been to New England before. We would like to know the best route and places to see over 4 days.
Four days in NH and VT in September
i would head up the coast to Ogunquit, ME area after leaving Boston. You could continue on to Portland and /or Freeport (especially if going into outlets and LLBean interests you)
Then you could cut across NH and go through the Lincoln/Woodstock area. There is an absolutely gorgeous hotel (restored ';grand'; old hotel) in Whitefield NH called Mountainview Grand.
You could continue across into VT and head to Manchester or Quechee. Lots and lots of ideas.
Be sure to plan ahead and make some reservations... that will be foliage time. Remember too that all of New England is easily ';driveable'; and not too far spread out!

I just found these great little maps on visitnh.gov under things to do...
this company makes one booklet for each state in NE and there are 7 back road routes mapped out for each.
Each map card gives you scenic back road routes with a map on one side and turn by turn directions on the other side.
These are awesome b/c each map lists the attractions you will pass on each route.
In the back of each booklet is the phone number to the attractions in case you want to visit on a whim and need more info.
I purchased mine on line at www.moto-maps.com.
I would suggest Newport, RI. Sailing, Mansion Tgours, wineries, beach, B%26amp;B%26#39;s, dining, shopping, sightseeing. It is America%26#39;s first resort.
