scots abroad

My husband and I are hoping to celebrate our 25th anniversary in New York and New Hampshire. Other than what we have seen on tv or movies we really are supreme novices as regards the USA. Any help would be appreciated to get us started on our plans for October. We are young, adventurous and are up for it - thanks all suggestions welcome

You are smart to start early. From NYC to Northern NH is about a 6 hour drive. There are several regions to NH that you may want to see. Depending on on where you want to go and what type of lodging you prefer will dictate what you get for an experience. If you can give some more info I can give you some help.

Depending upon when your arrival date in October .... foliage will be the major attraction during that season...the Northern part of the state will be in full color the first week or so of October...later in the month the better color will be in the southern region of the states. Being a resident of the White Mountains, I%26#39;d put a plug in for the White Mountains for the first two weeks of October and the southwestern part of the state (Keene/Peterborough) later in the month...the end of October Keene hosts the world famous Pumpkin Festival which has earned recognition in the Guiness World Book of Records for the most lit jack-o-lanterns - quite a site.

The White Mountain region is comprised of (3) notches or valleys...the most developed and crowded of the valleys is the Mt. Washington Valley/Pinkham Notch. The Crawford Notch is the most undeveloped and pristine and the Franconia Notch is a good balance of development and small village community.

The Franconia Notch showcases the Flume, Cannon Mt. Tramway, Hiking, Biking, Echo Lake, and a great recreational trail through the notch (paved and easily accessible). Lincoln (to the South of the Notch) has lots to offer...while Franconia (to the North of the Notch) is more of a small New Hampshire village...

Wherever you visit in October...advance reservations are strongly recommended as the foliage season is incredibly busy, so plan well ahead.

Sounds like a wonderful trip. I%26#39;m sure you can get some good advice on what to do in NYC on those forums. It%26#39;s a very exciting city.

As for New Hampshire, it%26#39;s a wonderful time to be in the mountains and enjoy the foliage. I%26#39;d recommend spending some time in the Mt. Washington Valley area. Jackson, NH is a perfectly beautiful village, and has many B%26amp;B and inns to choose from. Also, if you are inclined to do any outlet shopping, you are close to North Conway, a great shoppping mecca, and a nice little town.

Thanks you all for answering so quickly. I%26#39;ve certainly got a lot to think about but all your suggestions give me a good start. Will let you know, once I%26#39;ve drawn breath, and made some choices. Thanks
