I%26#39;ll be visiting New England in October and we%26#39;ll start in Bar Harbor and drive down the coast to Kennebunkport. We%26#39;ll then go inland and explore New Hampshire. What would be a good area in New Hampshire to explore? We%26#39;ll probably spend 2-3 days in NH before flying out of Boston. Any help would be great!
Driving Itinerary in October
The White Mountains are the most beautiful, scenic area of New Hampshire.
From south coastal Maine, your easiest route to New Hampshire would be Rte 302. This starts in Portland off of Rte 95. 302 merges with Rte 16 and takes you through North Conway, past its many shopping outlets and the village center. North Conway center has many interesting shops and some good dining options.
To really get a feel for the mountans though, you need to continue past North Conway, and up towards Mt. Washington (highest point in New England). Jackson, NH is located on Rte 16 and is a picture perfect New England village, complete with covered bridge. Jackson has many fine inns and B%26amp;Bs, and some good restaurants.
There are a couple of very scenic loops you can drive to explore the White Mountains further. You can take 302 through Crawford Notch, up to Rte 2 West, then travel south on 93 through Franconia Notch, then pick up the Kancamagus Highway back to Conway. Great scenery all along the way.
Depending on what type of activities you might want to pursue, this can be a day trip, or you could plan to overnight in the Franconia Notch area.
There is great hiking all through the White Mountain National Forest whether you%26#39;re looking for mountains to climb, or a short walk to a waterfall.
There are also many wonderful dining and lodging options in the small villages and towns through which you%26#39;ll be travelling.
Let us know what kinds of activites you%26#39;re looking for, and we can provide more info.
Driving Itinerary in October
Thanks for the tips Northbound! Since the White Mountains seems like the place to be, we will probably cut over before Kennebunkport to save on the driving time, maybe cut over from Portland? Our main goal is to see the beautiful scenery and foliage. We like exploring cute towns as well, but we%26#39;re not into antiquing very much.
Hi Enya,
If you want to see really gorgeous foliage, try to use this route below when you%26#39;re up around the White Mountains, get Mapquest out before you go so you can navigate this whole area out for it when you%26#39;re in through ME. and then heading over to the NH White Mountains area ...
For Foliage:
Head North on Rte 135 from Littleton, NH to Bridge St. in Lancaster to Rte 2 West - then 115A SOUTH to Rte 3 South to Franconia North, then 93S is not too far from there as well, but all in through here? You will see the most breathtaking foliage imaginable...it%26#39;s probably one of our favorite routes to take when we are up around there during the height of the foliage season and it doesn%26#39;t get crowded with traffic at all, that%26#39;s the beauty of it too.
October is a really pretty time of year to be in New England, have a great time planning it!
