Thanks,

Looking for reasonable or (any) lodging in/around the Lakes

Good morning KotULQQKin,

What about the Center Harbor Inn on Lake Winnipesaukee? Every time we drive by it, I always want to stay there some day!

This Inn has a beach right outside their door, it%26#39;s in a really good location to get to the many shops and restaurants right around Center Harbor, and it%26#39;s right on the water. The rates aren%26#39;t bad to stay there a night either. I don%26#39;t know how it would be this time of year though, you%26#39;d have to call them to see....603 253-4347. Here%26#39;s their site to check it out:

www.centerharborinn.com

Another possibility and it was always so convenient to get to different places around the Lake. We stayed here a few times when my nieces were young. It%26#39;s ';B%26#39;Mae%26#39;s Resort Inn'; in Gilford. They have 2 pools and Patrick%26#39;s Pub for lunch or dinner is right across the street. They%26#39;re reasonable to stay here a night too. You can check it out here or give them a call to see if they have anything available for you:

800 458-3877:

Good luck!

Looking for reasonable or (any) lodging in/around the Lakes

B%26#39;Mae%26#39;s Resort has a ';Managers special'; deal going on right now...it looks like a really good one too. Just call them and ask for the ';Managers Special'; that they have on their site advertised right now. It%26#39;s probably a good idea to call them as soon as you can if you do decide to stay here....

  • Story land trip

    Hi,

We are planning a trip to StoryLand with our 2 1/2 year old granddaughter and her parents. My son in law wants to go fishing and camping during the trip. Does anyone have a suggestion for a nearby family friendly campgroung? Although we are from Rhode Island, we have only been to the White Mountain area one time and that was 27 years ago on our Honeymoon!

    Thank you.

    Story land trip

There are alot of campgrounds on the Kancamagus Highway, which runs from I-93 to Conway. I haven%26#39;t stayed at any, but I wanted to mention to you, if you like Storyland, also try Santa%26#39;s Village, in Jefferson. Its perfect for kids under 8, and it is absolutely beautiful! My 5-yr-old daughter loved it more than Storyland! Have fun!

    Story land trip

The lantern inn in Jefferson,nh is across the street from Santas Village and has a campground which has tent camping and trailer camping. You can even rent a camper there. Two awsome pools Laundry and gameroom. Nighttime activities for kids, campfires everynight, bedtime stories right in your own rooms. We are from RI and we have been going to North Conway and Jefferson for about 9 years. We do not go to Storyland anymore. Too many people, kids have more fun and we find it more relaxing and enjoyable at Santas Village. More shade, they%26#39;ve been really updating quite abit. Beautiful setting. There is a Mc Donalds a little further dowm the road. There is a country store a little before SV that sells pizza, sandwiches, all kinds of groceries, camping items etc. We love this trip. We are already mourning the fact that our kids willnot want to go here for much longer. WE...are going to miss it.

try the glen ellis family campground 603-383-4567 They are only a mile from Storyland

    Aegean Motel at Hampton Beach

Has anyone stays at the Aegean motel on ocean Blvd. before? If you do please let me know how the place was?

    Aegean Motel at Hampton Beach

The Aegean Motel at Hampton Beach was always very clean and very reasonable a night to stay there. It%26#39;s located at 345 Ocean Blvd. 926-4600. I have relatives that stayed there every summer for the longest time and never had any problem whatsoever. In fact, this Motel along with one other, The Marguerite'; are the ONLY ones that my family and I will ever highly recommend for people staying over at that beach! We saw what the rooms and staff were like there many times and they certainly seem to be very professional and just fine with their guests.

The Aegean Motel is located right across from the beach and in a perfect spot for the fireworks every week! It%26#39;s just past the old Tastee Tower Pizza from Highland Avenue and ';the Lady'; statue right at the beach, which is actually the Marine Memorial but every one calls it ';The Lady';.

The Aegean Motel is in a much better location than any of the Ashworth Ave. Motels AND (it always was a better area all through the years!)

    Have Fun!

    Aegean Motel at Hampton Beach

We stayed there a few years back and it was horrible. Bugs in the room. a ridiculous stand up shower which howled when you turned it on, the most uncomfortable bed I ever slept in. New owners were going to rehab it so it might be better. Best things location and great front porch. Almost slept there instead of room.

So sorry to hear of your terrible experience with the Aegean Motel, I was very surprised to see that, I know my cousins never had that type of problem there any time they stayed there through the years. The ';Tastee Tower Pizza building was torn down completely this past winter which was located right near it and was probably where the ';culprits'; were coming from because it used to be an okay building but in the last several years after it was sold, the pizza tower got pretty shabby and gross looking for some reason. We knew the original owner and he was the nicest guy and kept it so nice and the pizzas used to be GREAT there before, that%26#39;s the pizza tower that I miss! Although I know some people that loved it there in the last few years with their kids for the Kareoke nights and I know for a fact that they miss the place this year a lot and couldn%26#39;t believe it was torn down! Meanwhile, the rest of us are so glad something was finally done about it! It looks SO much better when you drive by it now! Thanks again for your honesty just the same, my cousins kids are a little older now and won%26#39;t go anywhere with them, so those days are over for them and they won%26#39;t be needing any of those motels at the beach any time soon!

Deep Sea Fishing Around Rye / Portsmouth

I will be spending a week at a cottage on Rye Beach next month. I%26#39;m interested in going out on a half-day fishing trip. I%26#39;ve seen that quite a few places have such trips for fairly reasonable prices. Anyone know of any that are especially good / especially bad? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Deep Sea Fishing Around Rye / Portsmouth

    Hi Ride Guy!

The Atlantic Fleet that leaves out of Rye Harbor is one of the best! The boat is large, stable and comfortable! It%26#39;s a larger boat, not a private charter situation......

    I hope that helps!

Deep Sea Fishing Around Rye / Portsmouth

They are actually one of the companies I had found on the web. Thanks for the reccommendation!

You%26#39;re VERY welcome! Post here how it goes!

Have fun and I hope you catch the big one!!!

Inn at Ellis River or Inn at Thorn Hill

My husband and I are planning a trip to the White mountains for a few days. Can anyone give advice on the Inn at Ellis River and/or the Inn at Thorn Hill in Jackson. If you feel there is a better place in the Jackson area feel free to share. Thank you!

Inn at Ellis River or Inn at Thorn Hill

Haven%26#39;t personally stayed at either but I have heard lots of good comments about The Inn at Thorn Hill.

Inn at Ellis River or Inn at Thorn Hill

Jackson chamber of commerce classifies Inn at Ellis as a country inn. It is located just outside the village across rt 16 nestled on the river. people who stay seem to enjoy it. Thorn Hill is not a member of c of c ????? but is more like a upscale small hotel offering alot of amenities. it is located just off main st near the covered bridge. both are nice places to stay but different. if you%26#39;re a B %26amp; B type you might want to consider the Carter Notch Inn. It gets great reviews. Also the Jackson - Conway area has a ton of great places to eat. Enjoy!

The Inn at Thorn Hill is simply amazing! Lovely, comfortable guest rooms, a beautiful parlor (especially beautiful at Christmas time), a small pub for pre -dinner drinks, appetizers or peraps a game of checkers and the food is to die for! The view from the front porch is breathtaking.

Thank you for your responses. We did end up at The Thorn Hill Inn and loved it!! The rooms, staff, spa, and food were fantastic. We highly recommend staying there.

The Inn at Ellis River is a cozy, friendly place to stay.

All the rooms are unique. Please visit the website at

www.innatellisriver.com They have a wonderful package: Waterfall Adventure, Midsummer Night%26#39;s Dream.....

All the rates include a full breakfast and afternoon refreshments.

This is the place to stay.

    Courtyard walk to downtown?

It looks like the Courtyard hotel is a mile or so from downtown, which isn%26#39;t far but is it walkable.

    Thanks

    Courtyard walk to downtown?

Sure. It%26#39;s not that far from downtown. It%26#39;s on a fairly busy road though, as you%26#39;ll have to walk past the entrance and exits to Route 95. Stay on the side of the road closest to the harbor and you%26#39;ll be fine.

  • packing!

Visiting NH as part of New England trip end of September early October, to include Maine, Boston and the Cape.

Any suggestions to the range of weather we may expect so I know what clothes to pack?

    packing!

Sept can be a mixed bag but mostly on the positive side as end Sept to early Oct is my favorite time of the year. I wear shorts during day time into November. Days can hit 80 but also mid 30s. I would bring shorts, jeans, kakais, t-shirts, sweaters, etc. In other words a little bit of everything you own. Sorry I can%26#39;t be more specific.

    packing!

SusCie I don%26#39;t know where you%26#39;re from, but just make sure you stay casual! Even really formal restaurants here in NH are nice/casual. No need for the high heels or glitzy outfits. I am from Boston and am just continually amazed at how casual even ';dressy'; places are here - it%26#39;s a very laid back place, wardrobe wise (not politically that%26#39;s for sure).

Oh, and I forgot to say the key here is layers - bring stuff you can easily layer on and off, I agree with the expert it%26#39;s pretty unpredictable.

FloweredCow nailed it. Layers are the key. Remember that the weather differs greatly with elevation and proximity to the ocean. It can be much cooler in the mountains and coast than it is inland.

Winter Vacation with kids - first snow experience

ANy suggestions for a winter week flying into Manchester with 2 kids under 10? We have limited experience driving in snow, and kids have never seen snow. Would prefer cabin where we can cook our own food, and do outdoor activities (if we don%26#39;t wimp out) No desire for skiing, but maybe snowboarding??

Winter Vacation with kids - first snow experience

If you are looking for hard core winter cabin rentals suggest you google Colebrook and Pittsburg, NH. I believe some up there are open year round to accomodaate snowmobilers. They are in the tip up near Canada. You could expect sub zero on some days and snow could be guaranteed. After a day or two you%26#39;ll get hang of driving in snow. Further south in NH I%26#39;m afraid that you%26#39;ll be more likely to be finding lodges and Inns trather than cabins. Hopefully someone familiar with winter lodging in No NH will reply. Wish I could offer better info but winter in NH is something I tolerate not look for.

Winter Vacation with kids - first snow experience

Thanks for the reply, now I%26#39;m a bit nervous seeing as we are thin- blooded Floridians! I have been gravitating towards Southern NH in the Sunapee area to be able to get to some areas in Vermont we were interested in as well. I%26#39;ve been looking at cyberrentals for this. Any other suggestions? I assumed it was a given for snow in any part of NH in the winter, am I wrong? Thanks!

Snow is far from a sure thing in SO NH. Last year we had a very light snow fall in the south. Parts of So NH has nearly the same weather as Boston does. Now SW NH will have a little more snow but again no guarantee. In fact in many years the ski areas in No NH are crying for more snow and are near void of skiers due to bad snow fall. Every year is different. Recently (Global Warming stuff) winters have been easy. Like perfect weather in FL snow in NH is also a gamble. Could be perfect, could be crummy!

Hi- I suggest trying a rental home try looking a greatfamilyrentals.com or vacationrentals.com. I think with kids someplace like waterville valley or loon mountain would be a good area for you. These resorts have alot to offer families and make snow so you can also be certain you can try snowboarding unless its really warm for NH. They also have snow tubing which your kids may like and they might also have an ice skating rink.

Because nights can get sub zero- personally I wouldnt try a cabin. I like to be warm!

Have fun and enjoy getting your children out in the winter fun, my daugters are teenagers now and we are glad we did all the snow sports with them when they were little. They enjoy the sports now with their friends. We%26#39;re not cool enough!!

You will have plenty of options in the southwestern part of NH. All the ski mountains throughout the state make snow, because they cannot rely on Mother Nature. The Sunapee area has Mt Sunapee, a very good ski mountain for both beginners and experienced skiers. There are several other smaller mountains that are very family and beginner friendly. The two nearest me are Pat%26#39;s Peak and Crotched Mountain. I learned to ski at the ripe age of 50 at Pat%26#39;s. Crotched (pronounced crotch ed) Mtn just re-opened 3 years ago and has all state of the art facilities, and short lift lines. A great place to learn and grow. These places are in the Monadnock region named for the nearby Mount Monadnock.

Other similar mountains are Gunstock in Gilford, near Laconia, Tenney Mtn near Plymouth, and probably others that I am less familiar with.

For accommodations, and tons of other info, check the state tourism site at www.visitnh.gov, or www.visitnh.com. There will be links to attractions, activities, skiing, accommodations including cabins and rentals, etc. Also, try Googling vacation rentals nh.

Another place that my family has gone is King Pine Ski Area (Google them). They are a resort, but kind of low key and very family oriented, with a comnfortable ski mountain for learners. It is near the North COnway area. They also have a dynamite tubing hill where they tow you up a hill and you slide down sitting in a huge inner tube. No skill required except for screaming with delight.

It%26#39;s not a cabin but its not too expensive: Indian Head Resort in Lincoln, NH. Usually always snow because it is in the White Mountains. Close to skiing, ice skating on pond in back, tubing, indoor pool, heated outdoor pool, game room. Restaurant onsite thats pretty good and not expensive.

On our winter vacation we are going up to Pittsburg 2 nights to snowmobile. It is awesome up there but it is hard core - no luxury except for one restaurant. My 4 year old can do 2 days of snowmobiling but thats it - there is nothing to do. After we spend 2 days in the Northwoods we will be spending 5 days at Indian Head. We went there last year and my daughter can%26#39;t stop talking about it!

    Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies - good thing we have a little while yet to do the planning, there%26#39;s a lot here to check out! Thanks

Ditto what the others said about no guarantee for snow. Most years are fine, but you do get aberrations like last winter. If it%26#39;s snow you really want (and you should if you are coming all the way up here!), head north. Remember that it%26#39;s a small state, so northern NH is still not a long haul from the airport.

If you aren%26#39;t into skiing, you should definitely consider tubing! It%26#39;s just what it sounds like: flying downhill while sitting in on a big inner tube. It takes virtually no skill and it is an absolute blast. Even very little kids can do it.

Don%26#39;t worry too much about the driving. If you come during a big storm, just wait it out indoors (preferably with hot chocolate and a good fire) until the bad stuff passes. They plow things out quickly. Otherwise, the roads are pretty clear.

    Great Restaurant Downtown Portsmouth !

Looking for a ';great restaurant'; in the downtown area ';family friendly'; our son is 16 but a ';plain'; eater ! Looking for a place that we all will love... someplace with atmosphere , yet excellent food ! ';We would love the Dolphin Striker but our son is too picky for their menu ... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... by the way ... must serve cocktails !

    Thanks !

    Great Restaurant Downtown Portsmouth !

    Good morning Rollie,

The latest hit in Portsmouth these days that I know of is the Dunaway Restaurant located at 66 Marcy St. right across from Prescott Park. The chef is Mary Dumont and in just a few months ago she won the title of one of the Best New Chefs for 2006 in Food %26amp; Wine Magazine. This is quite an honor because it never happened that a chef from New Hampshire won that title. It%26#39;s one of the ';hot'; restaurants up there these days. You should see if you can get reservations, although with your son being 16 and picky, you better check the menu out good to see if he sees anything that he%26#39;d like before you get there:

    www.dunawayrestaurant.com

Another really good restaurant in Portsmouth? It%26#39;s an Italian restaurant that is just out of this world. It%26#39;s a little pricey but the cuisine and atmosphere is quite nice. It%26#39;s located at 59 Penhallow St. in Portsmouth, called Anthony Albertos, again check the menu out to see the many choices for your son:

    www.anthonyalbertos.com

The last one I%26#39;m going to recommend to you is the Library Restaurant. It%26#39;s always been very good in my book, it%26#39;s reasonably priced and it%26#39;s always been consistant as far as the cuisine is concerned, and if anything it%26#39;s even a little better than it ever was these days. This restaurant is located at 401 State St. in Portsmouth, you%26#39;ll really like the atmosphere here I think, it%26#39;s rustic and old New England:

    www.libraryrestaurant.com

Good Luck deciding and check back from time to time, there%26#39;s probably going to be other choices as well and have a great time, that%26#39;s the most important thing!

    Great Restaurant Downtown Portsmouth !

Hi Rollie.....All of the above suggestions are great! If your son is a ';plain eater'; he may not like the Dunaway though...

Does he like Italian? Rosa%26#39;a restaurant on State St. serves up traditional Italian fare in a homey atmosphere.

    www.therosa.com

If you like a view with your seafood (they serve burgers and chicken as well for the teenager) The Old Ferry Landing on Ceres St is fab!

No web site, but it%26#39;s in the Bow St Row of deck restaurants across from the tugboats.

Also very good for seafood is Jumping Jay%26#39;s Fish Cafe on Congress St.

    www.jumpinjays.com

    Mangia!!!!

Oops! I forgot one of the local favorites! The Blue Mermaid. They serve up carribean tinged cuisine and they have a fun atmosphere! Rachel Ray just visited there for her traveling show on the Food Network!

    www.bluemermaid.com

A very teen friendly place is the Muddy River Smokehouse. Cool atmosphere, great food, but ';plain stuff'; also. I LOVE the Blue Mermaid and Jumpin%26#39; Jay%26#39;s, but I wouldn%26#39;t dream of bringing a picky eater there.

Any place in Hampton to stay with 2 dogs?

We are looking to go to Hampton for the weekend for a suprise birthday party but don%26#39;t want to kennel our dogs again. Any hotel, cottages, etc that allow dogs?

    Thanks

Any place in Hampton to stay with 2 dogs?

    Hi Sezthadei,

There were only a few places that I could see online close to the seacoast area that is pet friendly. One of them is the Residence Inn in Portsmouth, NH. They allow pets, they charge a fee though, you%26#39;d have to give them a call to discuss it further with them if you choose this place. May be it wouldn%26#39;t be as bad for just a weekend stay, it%26#39;s up to you. This Residence Inn by Marriott is located at One International Drive which is the Pease Tradeport not too far from the Fox Run Mall in Newington, NH. It%26#39;s actually a few miles away from the beach you%26#39;re going to though, it%26#39;s not a bad drive, just a little out of the way though.

The other place that has pets allowed on their site is the Best Western The Inn at Hampton which is located right on Rte 1 at 815 Lafayette Rd. only a few miles from the beach area, they allow pets in smoking rooms only and also the pet has to be at least under 50 pds. (What are they going to do, put the dog on a scale and weigh it or something!) There # is 603 926-6771 if you wanted to discuss it further with the Innkeepers.

I don%26#39;t see any motels or hotels at the beach that allow pets. I seem to remember a televised meeting at the Selectmen%26#39;s town office one night and they were discussing the No Pets policy at the beach due to the huge crowds that are there during the summer months. I%26#39;d be surprised if you actually found a place at the beach that would allow pets? May be if you keep checking back here form time to time some one will enlighten us on this issue a little more and may be there really IS a place at the beach that would be pet friendly for you. I know the people in town that are in charge of the Seafood Festival they have every year usually will try to discourage people from bringing their dogs to the Seafood Festival every year because of the huge amount of kids and baby carriages etc...they%26#39;re kind of afraid something could happen over there one of these days with too too many dogs, even with these dogs on their chains and leashes and I have to agree with them because one of these days, with the thousands of people with young kids strolling through, there could be a serious incident one of these days over there. Even though they have a strict leash law, a lot of people still can%26#39;t get it through there heads that families with young kids come first at that beach, especially when it comes to the huge crowds they get now.

Good Luck just the same, I%26#39;m sure you will get more discussion on this to help you out a little more with finding a place! I think myself that the Best Western Inn at Hampton might be the place for you to tell you the truth, especially where there site says they%26#39;re pet friendly. It%26#39;s located only a few miles from the beach, it%26#39;s past the center of the town of Hampton, past the Old Salt/Lamie%26#39;s restaurant, keep driving up this Rte 1/Lafayette Rd. and you%26#39;ll see the Best Western on the right hand side just beyond Remick%26#39;s Funeral Home, you can%26#39;t miss it on the righthand side of the road. When you%26#39;re going back over the beach area you can very easily head over there by driving right back the way you came heading south down Rte 1 and when you pass the center of town (Hampton) area you take a left just before the Galley Hatch Restaurant to get yourself over to the beach again, you%26#39;ll see the sign right there for the beach as a matter of fact.

Good Luck and have a great time!

    jucuzzi

Looking to rent a home with a jucuzzi in Hampton Beach area

    jucuzzi

    Good morning Starwoman755,

The real estate agencies are listed right here for the seacoast of NH:

    http://www.hamptonbeach.org/real-estate.cfm

A lot of the agencies really want you to go in person to talk to their agents about your plans and to view the house or cottage for yourself. Usually they need the following information from you first, and keep in mind that rentals at the beach, especially during the high season change from day to day, which means a lot of rentals can%26#39;t be shown online because of this. In other words...they rent quick is what they%26#39;re telling you, here%26#39;s what you need to provide:

Dates of vacation, first %26amp; second choices

Number of persons vacationing with you %26amp; their relationship to you (include number of adults %26amp; children and ages of children).

They also need to know the total number of persons occupying the rental at any time, including day visitors, in order to find the appropriate size rental.

The number of cars (many units have only 1 car parking)

Indicate the area of the beach you prefer, if any

Indicate any amenities that are a necessity as well as those you would like but could get along without.

If you want a rental with a jacuzzi at the beach, then put it on your list and go from there with the agent and there all basically pretty good and will help you get what you want and if they don%26#39;t? Go to the next one and keep going until you get the right place you want. Be just as fussy with what YOU want as well!

    Good Luck!

  • John Fogerty Tix wanted

    Hi,

Just realized that JF is playing the Casino on Aug 8 as my wife son and I are coming thru from NB Canada to Boston. We are big CCR fans. It looks like the show is sold out (Casino website) but a message on Ticketmaster says to keep checking back as sometimes tickets are freed up closer to performance date.

Does anybody know if this really happens with casino shows. Are there any other avenues for ticket possibilties? Help!

    Many thanks.

    John

    John Fogerty Tix wanted

Can%26#39;t speak for the Hampton Casino but ticketmaster.com frequently holds back tix for fan club members, band families/friends, etc. Excess of these are released at last minute and are often best seats in the house. I have bought tix as late as day before a show in front five rows long after a show was said to be SOLD OUT!!!

Thanks for the info. I%26#39;ll keep trying.

For anyone who has seen a show there... any tips on General admission tickets. Are some of the GA seats better than others?

  • Staying on Lake Winnisquam

    Hi,

My husband and I are going on vacation with our 4 year old and I was hoping some of you might have suggestions of where to eat close by. We are renting a cottage in Sanbornton.

We are looking for casual dining but something ';lively'; enough to bring her along - something a step up from the chains.

    Any suggestions?

    Staying on Lake Winnisquam

You have asked for somewhat of a challange.

In the town of Tilton there are mostly chains. The Tilton Diner is very good and good for kids. My 5 and 3 yr olds refer to it as the pink place. Across the street is Kaliopes restaurant which is good, but personally a little on the pricier side. In Tilton you have all of teh normal chains foods, Chili%26#39;s, Applebees, Uno%26#39;s and the 99 Restaurant. Next to Shaws in the Green Ginger Chinese restaurant which has been good when we have ordered take out.

In Laconia, there is Hectors in downtown, the Soda Shoppe and Loose Biscuits. The last 2 do not sere dinner, but are good local places. Heading down Union Ave there is Fratellos Italian Restaurant, the Galley, CJ Averys Steakhouse. Down the road in Gilford is Patrick%26#39;s Pub, which is a good popular local restaurant. It is smoek free if memory serves me correctly.

There are also some places in Weirs Beach area. JT%26#39;s BBQ is across from Funspot and isn%26#39;t too bad.

I do not know if the local places have kid%26#39;s menu except for the TIlton Diner. If your up in Meredith try Gisupee%26#39;s Restaurant.

    This should help.

Summer vacation, English family, day trip suggestions please

    Hi

We are visiing New England during August and thanks to the advice I have been given here we have arranged all our accomodation.

    We have 3 nights in Boston, 7 nights at Cape Neddick (near York %26amp;

Ogunquit), Maine, 1 night in Wolfeboro and 3 nights in Jackson NH.

I%26#39;m now trying to organise day trips and activities for the family (me, my wife and 2 girls ages 12 and 15).

Boston I think we are OK, there will be plenty to keep us occupied, and I have already managed to get tickets for the Red Sox! Likewise the White mountains will depend on the weather but I have looked at some possibilities.

I%26#39;m looking for a few trips when we are staying in Maine. My wife is always keen to %26#39;do something%26#39; once a day (or every other day), she doesn%26#39;t like to just sit in the sun and read a book (my kind of vacation).

I would like to get a feel for the wilder and rocky parts of the coast or national parks but I%26#39;m keen not to spend the whole holiday driving or sitting in traffic. What would be some good days out along the coast with maximum of 1-2 hours drive to get there?

Is whale watching a possibility on this part of the coast and does anyone have recommendations?

Any other suggestions more than welcome.

Summer vacation, English family, day trip suggestions please

    Suggestions from Jackson, NH:

In my mind a must do the The Cog Railway up Mt Washington in Bretton Woods. This is very east to get to and a one of a kind. Check it out at www.thecog.com . I also suggest The Flume, a walking tour through a natural gorge. It%26#39;s part of the White Mountain National Forest and you%26#39;ll find lots opf info on it at any info booth. Another is The Tramway up Cannon Mountain or the gondola up Wildcat Mountain. Again info will be readilly available.

From Wolfeboro do The Mt Washington boat cruise. It leaves right from the town dock.

From York, ME travel south to Portsmouth, NH and take in some NE colonial history at Strawberry Banke a village of old, restored homes including John Paul Jones. Also take in Portland, Boothbay Harbor, Wiscasset and Camden, ME.

Summer vacation, English family, day trip suggestions please

We had already planned to visit Mt Washington however the cost of the cog railway at $228 makes it pretty expensive for a family of 4.

I had considered using the Auto Road instead which is a more managable $41.

Is the experience that much more special going on the railway?

A fun (and not too expensive thing) to do would be a short cruise. You could go to the Portland Public Market, get a picnic lunch, and head out. The first listing is for several different cruises that department from South Freeport (just north of Portland). One goes out to Eagle Island, Admiral Peary%26#39;s home. The second offers 2 hour schooner cruises of Casco bay.

    www.inusa.com/tour/me/portland/seal.htm

    portlandschooner.com/portland_schooner_day_s…

Popham Beach State Park (link below) is very nice if you would like a beach day. It is a little over an hour%26#39;s drive from Portland. I would make this a weekday trip, since it can be very crowded on weekends.

    state.me.us/cgi-bin/…

Whale watching is a possibllity on this part of the coast. There are several companies that take passengers out to Jeffrey%26#39;s Ledge, a feeding ground for several species of whales. Here%26#39;s a link to one:

    http://www.firstchancewhalewatch.com/

Yes, Portland. A wonderful to city to wander, shop, eat and be near and on the water. The cruises that someone suggested are great, if they fit your budget. An alternative is to take one of the ferries to one of the islands in Casco bay. Most of these are inhabited islands with both year round and summer residents. You can walk around the island, have lunch, etc. My family took our bicycles out to Peaks Island and had a great afternoon. I think there may be some mail boats that stop at several islands. You can probably just go aboard one of those pretty inexpensively and enjoy the cruise around the bay.

Other nice towns to visit include Ogunquit, Kennebunk and Lennebunkport (George Bush, Sr.%26#39;s summer home) and Porpoise Island, Freeport (home of L.L. Bean, open 24 hours, 365 days a year). And Portland. Did I say Portland?

And as has been stated, stay off the roads on Saturday and Sunday. Best time to enjoy Cape Neddick, one of Maine%26#39;s loveliest destination locations. If you weren%26#39;t staying there, it would be on my list.

Welocome to a lovely choice for summer travel!

    1. Boston, with the teens be sure to walk the ';Freedom Trail';(red-line mosaic walking path) of Boston%26#39;s colonial history and architecture...';Fanneuil (sp?) Hall'; is a must-see with summer concerts, contemporary shopping and outrageous local food-lunch!. Boston%26#39;s harbor is a feature of this city so a boat tour or a visit to ';Old Ironsides'; ship-at-dock is a way to enjoy and get the flavor of the city.

    2. Ogunquit is a art gallery-touristy-lovely village...park near Perkins Cove-which is painting-worthy-a New England visual delight and walk the ';Marginal Way'; an easy rocky coastal paved path along the beautiful homes and ocean...mist and rugosa roses scent your experience(30 min-2hours if pausing/reading/photos)...bring camera! Look for roadside ';lobster roll'; stands-they have the best taste of this local tradition-enjoy!

    3. Wells Beach may be your day of salt, sun and a good book, despite usu. chilly water this far north...near Ogunquit, while Old Orchard Beach nearby is a comercial, arcade/boardwalk type of carnival-at-the-beach.

4.Tour the Cape Neddick Lighthouse, known as ';Nubble Light'; of 1879

    5. Portland Museum of Art is exceptional NE museum,as well as Boston%26#39;s Museum of Fine Art.

    6. Biking trail in Portland is a new, fabulous, and well-mapped urban trail, with historic architecture, the flavor of Portland-very renovation-chic- and waterfront.

    Have Fun...lots of info/lit at hotels/on-line

Ahh,beautiful, NH,let me also add.... my family of teens don%26#39;t enjoy the commercial quality of nearby North Conway (near Jackson),cog railroad, etc. BUT you are near exceptionally beautiful trails for easy hikes to view waterfalls and moutain views.

    1. Drive the scenic Kancamagus Pass Highway(112) south from Jackson on rt.16,then turn rt./ west from N. Conway onto 112. Pack a picnic and easy-walk the Arethusa Falls trail (or more connected ones) and take a brisk swim/splash. Go on-line to White MountainsTrails, AMC trails, etc. to purchase map before travel, or buy from outdoor store in N.Conway.

    2. Drive North 15 min. on 16 to Glen Ellis Scenic Area and easy-hike trails there as well.

Remember to wear layers of clothing in NE due to weather changes and rapid cooling... invest in some high-tech wicking first-layer shirts and polar fleece outerwear pieces if you don%26#39;t already have. Pack plenty of water for any day trips(stores are far between)

Note: we were wary of driving beyond town-areas after dark...especially NOT Bear Notch Road!! Roads are not lit, moose,bear,etc...in remote areas hard to assess bearings sometimes.

Boston will be fun. You%26#39;ll enjoy the Red Sox. Go to Quincy Market and Fanueil Hall. Try to book a duck tour (do it on line).

Jackson is one of my favorite towns in NH. So picturesque. Nice hiking trails and restaurants. You could try mountain biking if you are adventuresome (Black Mtn./Attitash Mt.), or take the gondola up Wildcat Mtn. for the views.

Drive your car up Mt. Washington - do not take the cog. Waste of money, and the drive is nice (steep!). Bring a jacket for the top.

Wolfeboro is not too far from Lake Winnepesaukee.

I don%26#39;t know anything about Cape Neddick - BUT, if you look at a map, a bit further north in Maine is Acadia National Park. Absolutely beautiful, and usually overlooked. My family spend 8 days there, and could have stayed longer. Rugged coastline, canoeing, hiking, beach, biking. Very, very pretty.

Whale watching is a must. We even took a lobster boat cruise from Bangor.

    Good luck!

No need to be wary of driving beyond town areas after dark. True, the roads are not lit, but they are safe. Much of NH is rural. On the other hand, do be watchful for moose, deer and bear. It is not uncommon to see them at dusk and at night, too. Be alert. It is also common to see them in the daytime. As you drive, use your peripheral vision to scan the road in front of you and into the edge of the woods. That said, many people come to NH, and many come from southern NH to the White Mountains in hopes of seeing moose. There are even moose tours, where a driver will take you on a small bus to areas where mosse are very common.

These are large animals, but deer will usually run. If they freeze in your headlights, flip them off and on and the deer will run off. Bear mostly want nothing to do with you. These are not grizzly bears, and generally not aggressive unless you get between a mother and her cub. Moose will stand by placidly if they are grazing on the side of the road, and will even stand up in the middle of the road expecting you to run away from them. They are large animals. But, even if they are looking pretty placid, do not approach them too closely.

By the way, the NH Tourist information stops have excellent maps of the state that show more roads than the usual AAA or Rand McNally. They also sell an excellent White Mountain map that shows all the major roads as well as a lot of lesser roadds and unpaved roads. They also show all the hiking trails, and have descriptions of each of the trails on the back, rating them for level of difficulty. I think it is actually called a White Mountain Trail Map, and probably sells for about $5. This is also available at outdoor stores, as noted, and probably at souvenir stores, too. It is a great map for local touring of the Whites, whether by car, bicycle, foot, or whatever.

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

    Lakes Region/winnipesaukee? Suggestions?

We have 3 little kids, ages 3 and 4, want to go to the Lakes Region. Not sure which town to stay in. We live in NJ, so dont want to ';recreate'; the crowded feeling, but also dont want to be too remote.

Some of the things we%26#39;d like to do would be the scenic cruises, the train rides for the kids, etc. Maybe some very lite nature walking.

Weir beach appears to be a very crowded place, I don%26#39;t really want to vacation in a high traffic area.

    Thank youl

    Lakes Region/winnipesaukee? Suggestions?

I noticed you did not mention when you are going to visit. I will assume for my reply that it is the summer. Quiet areas of the big lake are Center Harbor, Tuftonboro, Moultonboro, and Wolfboro. This also means that you will further away from a lot of kids stuff which is centered around Weirs Beach.

You might consider the Squam Lakes region which would be quiet, an easier drive to get to some of the kids stuff and also close to some nice hiking trails.

Plymouth NH is also a quiet town, home to Plymouth State University and is right on I-93 which would provide nice access to both the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. There is no traffic like New Jersey on this highway.

Another area is the Lincoln/Woodstock area which can be a little crowded but has plenty for the kids to do, hiking and is only an hour from Weirs Beach.

    Some websites:

    www.meredithcc.org

    www.lincolnwoodstock.com

    www.squamlakes.org

    www.wolfeboroonline.com/chamber

    Hope this helps.

    Lakes Region/winnipesaukee? Suggestions?

    Thanks.

Ha, i am a sox fan in NJ! They need some pitching help.

I am going up to Killington to visit a brother, then driving over to NH, July 4 week. What I want to do is get a good taste of the Lakes Region. I have been to Mt. Washington, Franconia Notch a few years back.

I am also interested in Storyland for my little kids. I realize that is a decent drive from the lakes region.

    Good morning Jdkpa,

You%26#39;d really like the cruise on the big Lake, it%26#39;s well worth it, you can read about it here. There%26#39;s the Mt. Washington boat ride as well as the smaller boats like the Sophie C which is actually the Lake%26#39;s mailboat and as it%26#39;s delivering mailbags to the different islands on the lake you%26#39;re hearing different neat stories about each island out there and also a little history of the Lake and the various islands and the people that live on them, it%26#39;s pretty entertaining. You can view the following site to see what time they leave and also the most important thing is where each boat leaves from:

    www.cruisenh.com

B Mae%26#39;s Resort is in Guilford and I know you%26#39;d really like it here with your family. It%26#39;s in a really good location for the different attractions in the Lakes region, plus it%26#39;s got a pool and it%26#39;s kid friendly. Go to this site so you can review it when you get the chance:

    www.BMaesResort.com

I realize you%26#39;re not interested in anything near Weir%26#39;s Beach but I just wanted to make sure you knew that this past week was Bike Week and once all the biker visitors leave? It%26#39;s back to being quiet again, honest! It%26#39;s got a great penny arcade, a family fun center, cute little shops to explore that the kids would really like, a great boardwalk and the fireworks display is very good over the lake . You can view it online, you know you can always head to Weirs during the day from B%26#39;Mae%26#39;s Resort in Guilford it%26#39;s not far at all:

    www.weirsbeach.com/topten/reason4.html

If you absolutely have to have peace and quiet? Then think about heading to Newfound Lake and check out the kid friendly B%26amp;B that I spotted online just now! It looks out of this world on their site; it%26#39;s called ';The Meadowwind B%26amp;B';. I%26#39;m not familiar with this area because I always head to the Moultonboro area at the Lake, but I%26#39;ll tell you, this B%26amp;B looks QUITE nice and very reasonable to stay here a night so check it out when you get the chance:

    www.meadowwindbedandbreakfast.com

Storyland is in Glen, N.H. right on rte 16 in the White Mountains and their site has some very good lodging suggestions. I%26#39;ve only done day trips from the seacoast of NH to Storyland, I never actually stayed in the area for it, but I%26#39;m sure you will find a wonderful place to stay at with your family. There certainly are quite a lot of choices for this great region:

    www.storylandnh.com

Keep checking back from time to time, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll get some other ideas and suggestions as well.

Have a great time with your family!

    Thanks.

What is the nicest place to stay in/near Weirs beach?

    Hi Jdkpa,

To me, one of the nicest Resorts on the big Lake is the Inn at Mill Falls in Meredith, NH. B%26#39;Mae%26#39;s Resort in Guilford is pretty convenient and a little less pricier then this Inn of course. It%26#39;s up to you and what your budget is for your vacation.

You%26#39;d still be able to get to Weirs Beach area in no time from either resort and it%26#39;s also a very beautiful scenic drive from Weirs to Alton Bay as well along this stretch of road. Check this site out below and also click on ';area attractions'; on this site to see the different other sites with the areas various attractions in this whole region:

    http://www.millfalls.com

    Have a great time~

Winnipesaukee is my favorite summer vacation place. Here%26#39;s a few suggestion for where to stay... they all have websites, just go to Google to find them. The Channel Cottages in Weirs Beach... just around the corner from the Weirs... small cottages directly on the water, small beach, and easy walking distance to the attractions at Weirs. Cottages have cooking facilities, etc. Good for kids. Another place would be Silver Sands in Gilford... just a few miles from the Weirs... has a beach, pool, some efficiency rooms, etc.... and just next door is White Sands... also very nice. These would be quiet but not far from the action for the kids.

If you plan to stay for a week or more, try Preferred Vacation Properties. Best website for rentals. Not sure I%26#39;d want to stay at the Weirs. Noisy, honky-tonky atmosphere. Nicer towns are Meredith, Center Harbor, Moultonboro, Wolfboro. Lots to do at the lake. Scenic boat rides, the Winnipesaukee railroad takes you along the lake from Meredith to Gilford and back, Funspot and lots more. Be sure to take the kids to Hart%26#39;s Turkey Farm Restaurant in Meredith. They%26#39;ll love it. Thanksgiving in July. For lots more info, try www.winnipesaukee.com.

Have a great time. I love the lake and have been going there for 25 years.

If it is not too much short notice, I have a time share that I can rent for 7 nights from 7/15/06 - 7/22/06. Two large bedrooms, (one queen bed and one with twin beds), one double bed sleep sofa, 2 full baths, full size washer, dryer, overlarge living room -dining room, standard ktichen with microwave, stove, dishwasher, std. refrig., disposal, flatware, tableware and glassware included, 2 T.V%26#39;s with DVD player, deck, fireplace, located up the hill from and in the woods, 10 minutes walk to Weirs Beach, or drive. Extra parking spaces, outdoor pool, tennis courts, indoor activities center with full size pool, waterslides, Roman Hot Water Spa, 2 decks, vending machines, indoor racketball court, changing rooms, lockers and showers, 2 saunas, game room and pool table, outdoor boat and trailer storage, video rental, planned children%26#39;s activites, etc., etc. Five to ten minutes drive to supermarkets, Lake WInni., and Weirs and movie theaters. Reply here with contact email or tel. no. and I provide additional info..

I just found a place - Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. I have a 4 year old and someone at the Fish and Game Dept. told me that she would love it! There are all sorts of animals including a bear and bobcat. Light hiking.

    Have fun

place for lunch in Portsmouth, NH

We%26#39;re passing thru Portsmouth this Saturday from Boston to Lake Winnipesaukee and wanted to find a place for lunch. Most of the places listed on tripadvisor are only open for dinner. Mind you, I%26#39;m married to a Chef....

place for lunch in Portsmouth, NH

Downtown Portsmouth is the old part of town, with a lot of restaurants and craft stores. There are many good restaurants. There is a very good Mexican restaurant, Poco%26#39;s Bow Street Cantina, which is not your typical chimichanga joint. The food is different and excellent.

There are other good restaurants, too. I think many of them will be open for lunch. There is a good brew pub, The Portsmouth Brewery. Good beer and decent food. Very enjoyable place to eat.

  • how to own a foreclosure home
  • Good Mexican food in Lebanon

Found a great Mexican place in Lebanon, NH. It%26#39;s called Guzano%26#39;s, and its located behind the Powerhouse Mall in Miracle Mile Plaza, next to Hubert%26#39;s. The owner is from El Paso, and the food was the best Mexican I%26#39;ve had in this area. They had great posole, good chiles rellenos, handmade tamales, etc... They also have cheap Mexican beer during happy hour.

    Good Mexican food in Lebanon

This is a good thing to know for the next time we are up there. Really enjoyed our trip through, on the way to Maine, last fall.

By the way, wondertrev, ChrystinP on the Dallas forum is looking for you!

    Looking for a wedding spot

I%26#39;m looking for a romantic bed and breakfast or small hotel in New Hampshire that could host a lovely, memorable, but inexpensive wedding for 50-100 guests. Our budget is $8,000. Any great experiences or suggestions? We%26#39;re leaning towards fall for timing.

    Thanks!

    Looking for a wedding spot

Wow...big request. First of all NH%26#39;s Fall Season is ';THE'; most expensive time of year. Prices are higher than any other time. Also if you are talking 2006 and not 2007 I believe that you%26#39;ll find many inns and small hotels either sold out or near sold out. Are you talking 2006?

    Looking for a wedding spot

try the wentworth hotel in jackson

    Hi,

I was married on Sept 25. We did this as we were still able to enjoy some of the colors of fall without paying for it. We held our reception at the Harris Pelham Inn in Pelham NH, and it was very nice. We had a small budget and if memory serves correctly were able to feed about 120 people for around $5000.

There are some nice trees, especially birch that border their property and those tend to change early. There is also a small pond that offers a nice location for pictures. They have a gazebo and some carriages that you can use to take pictures.

Further up North you might want to try the Sunset Hill House in Sugar Hill, NH. It has wonderful views, but I do not know what their prices might be, I have a feeling it could be some what pricey.

Depending on where you go in the state, you could reap the benefits of the early colors and not payt for it.

Do you have an exact date in mind? That will help.

    Hi Curious56,

It depends on how far up through the state of New Hampshire that you want your guests to drive to. If you wanted a lovely Inn that%26#39;s only an hour from Boston; then one romantic Inn that comes to my mind is the ';Victoria Inn'; in Hampton, NH which is located at 430 High St. It%26#39;s a beautiful spot for a wedding as you can see on their site. You can give them a call to talk to them more about it, if you want, it%26#39;s a toll free # 800 291-2672 and also here%26#39;s their site to check out:

    www.TheVictoriaInn.com

When you talk to the owners you can discuss it further with them on your plans %26amp; budget and I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;ll work with you and give you a few different suggestions and ideas. It%26#39;s quite a place for a wedding and when you see it online? You%26#39;ll see what I mean! We drive by it a lot and there%26#39;s always weddings or some type of function going on there all the time and this time of year they%26#39;re pretty busy it seems.

Also as a suggestion? There%26#39;s also the ';Cathedral of the Pines'; in Rindge, NH located at 10 Hale Hill Rd. It%26#39;s got directions and all the information you%26#39;d need about it right on their site. The beauty of it is that it%26#39;s for all different faiths out there and weddings are held there all the time as well as other different ceremonies people want it for. They have a schedule of events listing on their site. I don%26#39;t know where you%26#39;d go afterwards though for a reception if you had it here, that%26#39;s the only thing, you%26#39;d have to investigate that part of it a little more, I%26#39;m not familiar with that part of NH too much. You can check it online or give them a call, there # is toll free 866 229-4520:

    www.CathedralPines.com

I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll get a lot of different ideas and suggestions, so keep checking back from time to time~

    Best wishes!

    Hi again,

I just got my edition of New Hampshire magazine in the mail and it lists a few neat places for weddings. One of them is in Sanbornton, NH at the Topiary at Owl%26#39;s Rest Farm, just click on small catered affairs on their site:

    www.TheTopiary.com

The other really nice place I just read about is the Inn on Newfound Lake in Bridgewater, NH. I have no idea what any of these above mentioned might want to charge you, that%26#39;s the only thing. You%26#39;d have to get in touch with each one of them to discuss the arrangements further. You might want to do this as soon as you can, especially if you%26#39;re leaning toward the Fall for this ceremony....

    www.NewfoundLake.com

    Again, Good Luck!

  • Help djf only 2 days in NH! What would you do?

We are doing a QUICK fall (we hope..) tour, arriving in Boston Sept 27, and leaving Boston Oct 4 to celebrate our 15th ann.

I love Ocean, my husband loves the Mtn%26#39;s. We%26#39;ve agreed to 2 days in Maine 1st and 2 days in NH White Mtn%26#39;s. Do you have any suggestions as to what not to miss for either place? And where would you stay?(town %26amp; place) And a route? I love quaint towns. We would love your advise!

BTW, thanks DJF, all of your comments we%26#39;ve read allowed me to talk my husband into Maine! (Being from a beach town, he thought why go ocean....)

Help djf only 2 days in NH! What would you do?

Let me toss this one around and I%26#39;ll get back to you tonight. BTW what type of places do you like to stay at? Inns, hotels, cottages? Are you planning on squeezing Boston in also? If not fly into Manchester, NH instead. I flew you NH to San Diego in January with change in DC and a nonstop from DC to SD.

Help djf only 2 days in NH! What would you do?

We%26#39;re flying into Boston and would like to squeeze it in. We%26#39;ve done Boston tourist stuff a number of times, and would don%26#39;t need to do the typical stuff. We may try to catch a Red Socks game, but its not important. We also need to stop by RI to see a friend. We like hotels, inns, cottage would be great too-- under $200 a night. We like to do some hiking (but not backpacking), and biking, and get in as much of the flavor of the places we see as possible. We don%26#39;t need to shop but maybe 10% of the trip. We%26#39;d love resturant recommendations too-- we love the hidden local spots, and they don%26#39;t have to be too fancy. Thanks for your advise!

This request is really difficult since I%26#39;m thinking you are trying to squeeze too much in in too short a time. That being said my suggestions for 2/2 split ME/NH would be:

    Maine:

I would head up Rt 95 towards ME passing by the NH Coast, Portland and head towards either Boothbay Harbor or Camden. Both are top notch spots, Camden is my favorite and it where the mountains meet the ocean. Look up Glenmoor By The Sea here on TripAdvisor reviews for first hand comments and pictures from last August.

    http://www.glenmoorbythesea.com/

    tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g40550-d4906…

Once in the area you%26#39;ll find a variety of sailing charters or lobster boat tours charters for a few hours at reasonable prices. Camden offers many great Inns and B%26amp;Bs in the area also. Sorry but can%26#39;t give first hand on any B%26amp;B or Inns.

If you do go to Boothbay plan to hit Wiscasset, ME at lunch and look for Reds Eats at the bridge on Rt before the turn to BBH. They are a real hole in the wall but have lobster rolls to die for. The line at the window can be l-o-n-g at times. Wait!

    www.hollyeats.com/Reds.htm

    New Hampshire:

Since the mountains are your husbands thing I would head right to the Mt Washington area staying in yhe picture book village of Jackson where you%26#39;ll find many top notch inns.

    http://www.jacksonnh.com/

I cannot give you any first hand info again but have heard nothing but top comments regarding The Notchland Inn.

    http://www.jacksonnh.com/lodging.html

Another top notch lodging in the area would be The Mt Washington Hotel %26amp; Resort. Beyond my budget but world class.

    www.mtwashington.com/

While there I suggest the Cog Railway or the Mt Washington Auto Road. The Cog is a true one of a kind.

    http://thecog.com/

    www.mountwashingtonautoroad.com

Get back to me with comments or other questions.

Thanks! I%26#39;ll ';chew'; over the information and get back to you if I have further questions! All the best!

Sorry to second the concern for ';too much'; in such a short period, it would not help my husband and I spend time ';together'; but, rather only meeting our time/agenda.

One wild suggestion;..do both the mountains and ocean in amazing Acadia National PArk on Mount Desert Island, ME , appx. 5 hours north of Portland for 4 days! Fly into renovated-chic Portland,Me, have RI friends meet you there, and then drive up to the Island...you will be romanced by this unforgettable place of rocky coastlines and pink-stone top mountains. Plenty of B%26amp;B%26#39;s in historic Bar Harbor (quieter time of year) or beautiful Inns. Be sure to do ocean coastal walk ';Ocean Path'; and take a boat ride in majestic Frenchman%26#39;s Bay at the base of the mountain island.

    but...

    My reccomendation for NH:

    1. Drive the Kancamagus Path Highway east-west from Jackson to Lincoln. Lincoln is disapointing, don%26#39;t plan to visit...a great ski town however. Quaint would also be Littleton, furthur north of Lincoln.

2 .HIKE! at least once..., there are plenty of easy walk/hikes near most areas in NH(so you don%26#39;t have to pack for strenuous/day trip shoes/layers,etc)...if you stay in lovely Jackson,...or off of the Kancamagus- there are plenty! Contact on-line references to purchase map, book or down-load hikes to consider and plan for. Fall foliage requires a vista/view hike and Glen Ellis Scenic Area is one area close to Jackson with connected trails %26amp; the Wildcat Gondola mountain ride.

    Some searches for trails:

New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation.

Crawford Notch State Park (nearest to Jackson)

    Wildernet.com

    White Mountains Hiking

    AMC

We%26#39;ve come to an agreement of going to Boothbay Harbor for 2 nights, and Jackson, NH for 2 nights, the rest in Boston. So thank you for all of your help! Obviously we realize we can%26#39;t miss Reds Eats. Are there any other reccomendations for favorite places to eat %26amp; stay in or near those two towns?

Down the road from Jackson is North Conway and a good restaurant there is Horsefeathers. It%26#39;s right on the main drag and right in the center and across from the train station and village common. Just park anywhere and ask anybody where it is.

Lake Winnipesaukee Cruise or Portsmouth Inland River Cruise

I will be in New Hamsphire for the fall foliage and will be driving from Boston to Franconia on monday October 9. I am trying to decide on whether to take the Lake Winnipesaukee Cruise or Portsmouth Inland River and Fall Foliage Cruise. Have anybody done both?

Lake Winnipesaukee Cruise or Portsmouth Inland River Cruise

I have taken both and enjoyed both. SInce you are already driving from Boston to Franconia, I would recommend the Mount Washington on the big lake. The foliage will be further along than at the coast and just for ease of driving it will be easier and less time spent in the car and more enjoying Mother Nature%26#39;s art show.

Lake Winnipesaukee Cruise or Portsmouth Inland River Cruise

Thanks for the reply - I will check out the big lake then :)

    restaurants/accommodation in the white mountains

can you recommend Inns/B%26amp;B accommodation in walking distance to restaurants, we do not mind which are within the white mountains.

    Thanks.

    restaurants/accommodation in the white mountains

In the western White Mountains I would recommend the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock, NH. They have 2 restaurants attached and are also located with a short walk of several others, or a 5 min drive from the town of Lincoln which has several restaurants.

  • 2006 fall foliage trip

My husband and i really like new england, we honeymooned in NH., Mass. and RI. Nov. of 2003 and returned in late Oct. of 2004 for a work/vacation. This time my husband and I will be traveling with our new baby ( she will be 4 months in oct.) to new england in october. we are flying in and out of hartford, Conn. Oct.5 - Oct.14 so we have 8 days to see the foliage. We were planning on a day in Vt. near ben and jerry%26#39;s and lake champlain, couple days in Nh. near the white mountains (castle in the clouds?), couple of days in maine somwhere, not sure about Conn. yet and maybe a day in new york city. Iam a little worried about all the driving with the little one so If any one has any suggestions or advice on what to do and where to go I would greatly appriciate it, i know we need to make resevations soon. Thank you for your input.

    2006 fall foliage trip

So, this baby is about a month old, now, eh? How tired are you? Do you have much experience of traveling with her, yet? My baby experience suggests that your optimal driving will be when the baby sleeps. Fortunately, at that age, they sleep a lot, but depending on the baby, in 15 minute to 3 hour segments. When she awakes, depending on her temperament, you will have 15 minutes to an hour or so of driving before you have to take care of baby business, including just being out of the restrictiveness of a car seat.

The locations you have mentioned are all probably 3 to 5 houors apart. And, in the vernacular of NH, ';You can%26#39;t get there from here.'; Burlington, VT to the White Mountains in NH does not have a lot of neat high speed highways. Likewise, NH to Maine, depending, especially, on where you are headed.

I would suggest lowering your travel expectations. The VT/NH/ME locations will probably be ideal for fall colors. I would drop NYC and CT. If you have not yet booked your travel, you also might want to consider flying into Burlington, VT, Manchester, NH or Portland, ME, and possibly even into one and home from the other, with a rent it here, drop it there car rental. If I had to choose one airport, I%26#39;d choose Manchester. It is reasonably convenient to both VT and ME, so you can fly in, drive to VT, do your cut across NH to ME, and return easily enough to Manchester. By the way, if NYC is important to you, drop either Maine or VT and leave some time to get there. But I%26#39;d recommend making that another trip.

The locations you are considering all sound great. Lake Champlain is beautiful and Burlington is a great city. In the Whiite Mountains, I%26#39;d avoid the North Conway area, just for traffic, but if you are there mid week, it may not be as bad. North Conway is home to excessive outlet shopping, though the rest of the area there is gorgeouos. But you can get a lot of the beauty driving up through Franconia Notch (I-93), across to Twin Mountain and down Rte 302 through Crawford Notch and past Mt Washington and the impressive Mt. Washington Hotel, down through North COnway to The beautifully scenic Kankamagus Highway (Rte 112) and back to the base of Franconia Notch. If you stay on the Franconia Notch side, there are lovely and convenient places to stay below the notch in Lincoln and Woodstock or above the notch in towns like Franconia, Sugar Hill, Littleton and a host of other towns both above and below the notch.

In Maine, if I were to go to one place, it would be Acadia national Park/Bar Harbor. But that will be a lot of driving on winding 2 lane roads across the state from NH to that part of the coast. My next choice would be the other Portland, in Maine, and any section of coast in either direction north or south. Portland, like its namesake in Oregon, is a great city, though smaller. Good wallking, shopping, eating, on the water opportunities, etc. The coast of Maine is gorgeous. There are tons of places to stay. I don%26#39;t know how busy they get at that time of year, though I%26#39;d guess pretty busy. From Portland, you are about 2 hours back to Manchester.

    atlantic four winds

we,re planning to go to rye this summer and before making reservations, i would like to know how it is inside the cottages.is it new?is it nice?

    please send an answer

    sorry for my english

    atlantic four winds

Hampton is a day trip for me. Haven%26#39;t stayed there but it always looks nice fom the road.

    atlantic four winds

    Hi Lynn1924,

The Atlantic Four Winds are located directly across the street from Wallis Sands Beach at Rye Beach. You%26#39;re going to really like it here I%26#39;m sure! I%26#39;ve driven by this place a LOT and from the road in the summer you never ever see a NO VACANCY sign; which is a VERY GOOD sign on the Seacoast that things are going GREAT for them. It certainly looks immaculate from the road to stay there. One thing it has that would sell me on staying there and that%26#39;s a POOL, it%26#39;ll be GREAT if the beach is too crowded! I like Wallis Sands Beach a lot and try to go there myself a few times in the summer, IF we can get a parking spot, some times we have to go at the crack of dawn! You%26#39;ll be lucky staying right there, you just have to cross the road and you%26#39;ll be right there.

You%26#39;ll have to make sure you go to PETEY%26#39;S for lunch at least once (or twice!) Here%26#39;s their site to check it out, it%26#39;s SO good:

    www.peteys.com

    Have Fun!

Oops...I just noticed my error, too funny! I mean you ALWAYS see a NO VACANCY sign at the Atlantic Four Winds during the summer months...sorry about that little mistake!

    Enjoy your stay here!

    hi!

just returned yesterday from Atlantic Four Winds! I have stayed there many times! We love it! The cottages are always clean and relatively new. A+

Place on a lake. . . Vermont, NH or MA

We%26#39;d like to stay somewhere near the Berkshires, but want to be on a lake. Ideally, we%26#39;d love to stay at an inn, b%26amp;b or hotel that%26#39;s situated right next to a lake. Are there place where you can just jump in the lake for a swim before breakfast? Ahhh.... that would be perfect.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

Place on a lake. . . Vermont, NH or MA

Across the NH line into ME is the town of Rangeley, ME that has a beautiful lake. Rangeley is a step back in time to old time New England. I have heard of a cottage colony that is well liked called Sam-O-Set (link below) that is right on the lake. Rangeley in across from NE NH and just into Maine moose country. Not quite what your ideal was but thought I would pass it on. I%26#39;ll get back if something else comes to mind.

Place on a lake. . . Vermont, NH or MA

I鈥檝e got some ideas for you. Just north of your Berkshire鈥檚 in MA in Wilmington Vermont I think you鈥檒l find just what you鈥檙e dreaming of. A place right on a lake. Check out the web site I鈥檝e listed below for you.

    http://www.vrbo.com/73448

Thanks for your help. We%26#39;re off tomorrow to Vermont. Found a nice (we hope) place near Woodstock, VT. There%26#39;s bound to be a lake around there somewhere. . . so will report when we get back.

You%26#39;ve made a good choice. You%26#39;ll like the Woodstock area. Be sure to check out Silver Lake State Park! http://www.vtstateparks.com/htm/silver.cfm

  • Family of 5 - where to stay, what to do?

We will be going to NH the 3rd week in July. I have a 2 yr old, 11 yr old, 13 yr old so I am trying to do something for everyone. We definitely want to visit Storyland and the Attitash Alpine Slide, etc.

Attitash Grand Summit was a bit pricey but I liked being close to the attraction. I wasn%26#39;t crazy about the pull out sofa either I was thinking the 2 yr old and I could retire to our room as the older ones continued with their activities.

We are also looking at Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn, or Best Western Mountain View in North Conway. Any suggestions? We need 2 Q beds plus a mini fridge and enough room for the Pack %26#39;n Play.

If we stay in N. Conway, how far is that from Attitash attractions? I am concerned that the older ones will want to stay at Attitash all day, but the 2 yr old will need to go back to the hotel after a couple of hours. Is there any place to ';rest'; at Attitash?

Family of 5 - where to stay, what to do?

Not sure about resting areas at Attitash nor am familiar with the hotels, but it%26#39;s between 9-10 miles from N. Conway on Rt 16/302. Storyland is in between just up Rt 16 after it splits from Rt 302 in Glen.

Mid summer traffic through N. Conway tends to be thick and last week there was a lot of road construction on Rt. 16/302 between N. Conway and Intervale. Don%26#39;t know if it will be finished or if they will back off of it once as July roles around. West River Rd could be an alternative between the two areas.

Family of 5 - where to stay, what to do?

It sounds like you needa condo not a hotel room. there are many timeshare/condo places that reent rooms in north conway.

    try this

    www.resortscope.com they offer rentals

There is a new vacation rental company just north of storyland. I think their name is Pinkham Vacation Rentals.

Thanks for the suggestions. Is Attitash an all day thing or should we just allot a couple of hours for it? Are there any water parks or tubing in the North Conway vicinity that my older 2 kids could do?

Attitash can occupy as little or as much time as you like, depending on your interests, stamina and wallet. Storyland is fun, but the 11 and 13 year old may scoff at the young appeal.

For something a little different, there is a place in the area called Diana%26#39;s Baths. It is a stream that rolls down the mouontain into endless pools where you can swim and soak. I believe there once were baths there, maybe 100 years ago, and the remnants still remain. But it is a natural place, no cost, and will entertain everyone for quite awhile. It is good to have water shoes or sandals that you can wear in the water, but can be done barefoot, too. You can bring a picnic lunch. There is a little bit of walking involved to get to a good spot, but it is pretty minimal and not at all technical.

Diana%26#39;s Baths are accessible from River Road, which parallels Rte 16. It runs from Rte 302, about a mile or two west from the junction with Rte 16. Turn left (or right, if you are coming from Attitash). You can also use this road to drop you into the middle of North COnway, or avoid it entirely, coming out to the south in COnway. One of the secret shortcuts, which I would not tell you about except for the access to the Baths ;-)

    Breakfast in Portsmouth

We are looking for a good place to have breakfast in Portsmouth, or Kittery, Maine. Any suggestions??????

    Breakfast in Portsmouth

    Hi Ctyankeegirl,

We really like the ';Country View'; Restaurant in Greenland, it%26#39;s located right on Portsmouth Ave. not too far from Portsmouth at all. In fact it%26#39;s probably one of the only places we like for breakfast these days. It gets crowded because it%26#39;s really good~

It%26#39;s been voted The Best Breakfast on the Sea Coast for two years in a row. It has the real Belgian Waffles with Fruit. Pumpkin Pancakes or The Wood Cutters Special: Steak, two eggs, home fries, beans and toast, plus breakfast is served all day, so you don%26#39;t have to rush to get there. It%26#39;s open at night too now from Tuesday to Saturday. Look for it, it%26#39;s really good~

    Country View Restaurant ? Route 33 (692 Portsmouth Ave.) Greenland, NH ? (603) 431-7426

I worked with a lot of people from Kittery and York and guess where a lot of them go for breakfast or lunch and it was highly recommended quite a bit. It%26#39;s at the York Hospital~so one day we tried it there for breakfast and it was out of this world. It%26#39;s right off of Rte 1 just past the Kittery Outlets a way, you%26#39;ll see the little sign for the York Hospital and York Village. That%26#39;s where you take the right for this , plus it%26#39;s open to the public, so don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s ';hospital food'; or anything because it wasn%26#39;t, it was absolutely wonderful there. The atmosphere as well as the incredible cuisine, you%26#39;ll be surprised. You can read about it here to see what you think:

';York Hospital%26#39;s award winning Dining Service Team offers a variety of delicious foods to tempt even the most fickle palette. Our patients, visitors and staff enjoy, among other things, lobster rolls, roast sirloin dinners, homemade breads, ';the best seafood chowder in town';, gourmet coffee and decadent desserts. The hospital is legend in the community for its fine cuisine.

Also Home meal delivery is available to the community Monday through Friday within the hospital%26#39;s service area. Home delivery orders should be placed by 9 am the same day.

Just dial 207 351-3466 to hear the most up-to-date menu choices available....

Other than that, there%26#39;s a lot of little places right in Portsmouth, one really really good place that we love is the Portsmouth Gas Light Restaurant, it%26#39;s located right on Market St. in Portsmouth. They have weekend breakfasts that are terrific, you could see if you can get in the door here, it%26#39;s pretty popular!

    www.portsmouthgaslight.com/GLBreakfast.php

Breakfast is served in the dining room at the Wentworth By The Sea Marriott Hotel and Spa located at 588 Wentworth Road in New Castle, NH. It%26#39;s a pretty scenic drive from Portsmouth along Rte 1-B heading south to this stunning Resort.

The Cafe Espresso located on Islington St. in Portsmouth is another gem that you could see about, it%26#39;s very good here.

Good luck, I think you have a lot of choices on the seacoast for breakfast, you won%26#39;t have any trouble, the thing is? They get crowded on weekend mornings, so plan accordingly.

One last site to check out that%26#39;s great is this:

    Have a wonderful time!

    Breakfast in Portsmouth

    Dear NoMo1,

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I%26#39;m sure we will try one of them on the way up this year and I save the others for future trips.

    Ct. Yankee girl

I like breakfast at the Friendly Toast. It%26#39;s a unique restaurant decorated in 50%26#39;s and 60%26#39;s kitsch. The food is full of unique flavor cominations that somehow work really well. There is usually a line out the door so get there early.

The Golden Egg is also a great restaurant for breakfast- always busy here as well on the weekends. The food is more traditional than at the Friendly Toast, but it%26#39;s really good!

I haven%26#39;t lived in the area for a few years, but these places are classics, so I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;re still around!

I%26#39;ve heard the the Friendly Toast is very good. Thank you. What is so different about the place - as in the staff all have tatoos? Anyone know????

I%26#39;ve lived in Portsmouth for over 25 years and here%26#39;s a good breakdown of breakfast places to try:

    The Golden Egg

    960 Sagamore Ave

    Portsmouth, NH 03801

Great breakfasts, the fluffiest omelets in the seacoast. A little above average in price, but well worth it. Weekends have long lines, so plan on getting there before 8am or 11am. If you can wait, the line moves at a good pace. What to try- any of their fluffy omelets.

    The Country View

    www.nedine.com/CountryView.htm

    Rt 33 Greenland, NH 03840

Good breakfast and very reasonably priced. However, I feel the quality has gone done (just a little) the past year. They recently started serving dinner which I heard was good. Same with the lines- get there early or plan for a little wait. What to get- CVS- Country View Special, you get a lot for a little ($)!

    Cafe Espresso

    seacoasteats.com/cafe_espresso/breakfastmenu…

    800 Islington Plaza

    Portsmouth, NH 03801

Solid and consistent breakfasts! The owner, Dave, is very friendly and his menu is also reasonably priced. Lines are here too! What to try- Cafe Bene. Mmmm!

    Isis

    106 Penhallow St.

    Portsmouth, NH 03801

A little more upscale and pricier...however, very tasty! I tried their Cajun Eggs Benedict w/ crawfish- very good. No waiting here. What to try- FRENCH TOAST! Melts in your mouth.

    Abercrombie %26amp; Finch

    www.abercrombieandfinch.com/menu.php?menu=Sunday+Breakfast+Brunch

    219 Lafayette Rd.

    North Hampton, NH 03862

Right on Route 1, this is a great deal if you bring your appetite on a Sunday morning. The wait isn%26#39;t bad at all, but for $9.95- you get a lot of good eats. What to try- obviously, their Sunday Buffet.

    Old Salt

    www.oldsaltnh.com/images/brunch2.jpg

    490 Lafayette Road

    Hampton, NH 03842

All I have to say is, WOW! It is a little more than the Abercrombie %26amp; Finch Sunday Buffet. But bring your ';A'; game appetite is this place has something for everyone. For $14.95, this Sunday Brunch Buffet also has a tall chocolate fountain. With breakfast %26amp; lunch items in the buffet, this is a true Sunday Brunch! There is a good crowd, but go right to the bar to grab a seat without waiting. What to try- do I have to ask?

With so many restaurants along the seacoast, these are the ones I frequently visit.

Good luck and please email me if you have any questions:

    jaydog16@hotmail.com

Thank you so very much for taking the time to give us all of these great suggestions. I just love this forum!

Friendly Toast is fun and different. It is not your typical breakfast place in the sense of their decor and atmosphere. The menu is very unique because they have creations that we all think about putting together. It%26#39;s also a hot spot for late nighters since they are open 24hrs on Fri and Sat.

    Great Link:

    http://www.hollyeats.com/FriendlyToast.htm

Great thread. I%26#39;ll have to give the dining room at York Hospital a try, if for no other reason than the curiosity factor. Maybe I%26#39;ll be able to squeeze in a burger before I schedule my next bypass.

While many of the posts here are great!..., One long time icon has been left out that I feel I need to mention....Geno%26#39;s. Located on the waterfront across from Strawberry bank, it%26#39;s been family owned for many decades and it has a ...shall we say...unique charactor to it. It%26#39;s a locals place without a doubt...but colorful and good food. Basic eggs, bagels, etc.....(Lunch brings trhe best lobster roll in town!) But if you don%26#39;t opt for the deck and stay inside, you will hear the locals debating politics, local and national....always an experience.......and worth a visit!

Also...The Friendly Toast...Such a hoot! Love the place! The menu is very inclusive. Everything from all veggie to an all out meat feast! The people who work there are great...the atmosphere is a bit kitschy/funky....Alot of people find it charming as do I. Plus the food is to die for!

    Enjoy!!!

  • Baltimore/Annapolis/NH ?

I plan on going to Baltimore for a couple of days, maybe to Annapolis too to catch some history, and a ballgame. Then because of airline points I can fly to Boston too which I%26#39;ve already been too. I%26#39;m willing to drive a little and would like to go somewhere coastal. It seems maybe Portsmouth or any suggestions would be appreciated. Or maybe somewhere closer? I%26#39;m willing to spend a few more dollars than usual to stay somewhere nice since it would only be for 2 nights. I would love to be on a beach and stay somewhere with an outdoor pool. I have a 13 and 15 year old with me. Thanks so much.

    Baltimore/Annapolis/NH ?

    Hi NancyB19,

Right on the coast of New Hampshire is the Marriott%26#39;s Wentworth By The Sea Hotel %26amp; Resort. They definitely have an outdoor pool because I was there last summer. It%26#39;s beautiful too. You%26#39;d have the coast of New Hampshire which is about 16 miles may be if that right at your fingertips for any one of NH%26#39;s coastal beaches yards away from this stunning Resort or you could drive north if you wanted to a little ways and go right over the border in to Maine and head up to Kittery, which is only over any of the bridges in Portsmouth. From Portsmouth you could get to either York, Ogunquit, Kennebunkport or Old Orchard, it%26#39;s up to you.

Check out this stunning resort, if you wanted to stay some where really nice? Then think about this Resort:

    www.wentworth.com

Also the Sheraton Portsmouth Hotel would be ideal if you didn%26#39;t want to stay at the Wentworth By The Sea%26#39;s Resort. The Sheraton has an indoor pool and you%26#39;d also be within walking distance to all the great shops in town if you didn%26#39;t want to drive through here, although don%26#39;t worry about parking the garage across from the Sheraton is very very reasonable. It%26#39;s also right near the boats to take a Harbor Cruise, so that would be pretty convenient for you and something to think about.

Finally, there%26#39;s ONE more place that I want you to look at if you get a minute, it%26#39;s at the Portsmouth Rotary, very easy to get to from I-95 as a matter of fact. It%26#39;s an Inn that is absolutely perfect to get to Portsmouth%26#39;s downtown as well as all the beaches. You can decide when you see it, it%26#39;s got an outdoor pool and the rooms are quite nice, for the money you can%26#39;t beat it:

    www.portinn.com

To top it off if you stay at ANY of these places you just have to ask at the front desk for directions for dinner or lunch on your visit for this great spot and you won%26#39;t be far from it at all, it%26#39;s called ';Chauncey Creek'; Lobster Pier, it%26#39;s located at 16 Chauncey Creek Road in Kittery Point, ME. It%26#39;s right over the border from Portsmouth and you won%26#39;t be far from it if you stay at any of these great places, so take your pick, HAVE FUN!

You can read about all these neat places and decide yourself:

    Baltimore/Annapolis/NH ?

Thank you so much. You were so helpful. But of course now i have a few changes. Now it looks like I will be flying into Manchester NH which still seems pretty close to Portsmouth. The marriott looks great and i think we might splurge for 2 nights. I was thinking then for a change maybe we should spend 2 nights in the white mountains before we go home? The resorts look gret and very reasonably price for summer time. I%26#39;d like to drive less than 2 hours from Portsmouth and stay somewhere that has a great outdoor pool and activities with never leaving the resort until we leave. I understand North Conway is too commerical? but I really just want to go to the resort. Thanks again. It%26#39;s hard plannning things when you have no idea!!

Need help with Ivy League whirlwind tour itinerary

Arriving with family in Providence Aug.5th, departing Aug.12th. Will rent car and would like to spend the week touring Ivy League schools, spending a half day at each. Would like to have a full day for Dartmouth/Hanover and Cornell/Ithaca. If possible would like to fit in a major league baseball game (any venue) and/or a day at Cooperstown for baseball Hall of Fame. Would sacrifice forays into NYC/Columbia and Philadelphia/Penn in consideration of the time squeeze.

Any help with this itinerary would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Rich K.

Need help with Ivy League whirlwind tour itinerary

Sounds like you need to catch Brown first. Would then head to New Haven, CT to go to Yale. After that make e beeline to Boston for Harvard then North to Hanover/Dartmouth. FORGET Red Sox game since they are sold out for year. Scalper tix will be an arm, a leg and a ___ ! One exception to that is on day of game a FEW tix go on sale, ie: obstructured views, etc. After Hanover head to Cornell and Cooperstown is on the way. Used to live in Central NY and and have been many times. It is as good or better than what you probably expect.

Need help with Ivy League whirlwind tour itinerary

Here is my suggestion after some research and some assumptions such as do they offer tours on weekends:

    Saturday Arrive in Providence

Drive to Cooperstown, NY 5 hour drive

Sunday Spend day at Cooperstown then drive to Ithaca (3 hours away)

Monday Day at Cornell then drive 4 hours to Philly for Penn College.

Tuesday Morning at Penn then drive to Columbia

Tuesday Night Watch Mets at home versus San Diego

Wednesday Drive to New Haven Spend Half Day at Yale
