family move

I am considering moving our family from the southwest back to New England. I am not familiar with the small towns/cities of Southern Vermont or New Hampshire, having grown up in southern Connecticut, so I%26#39;m looking for feedback on good places to raise a family--great schools, lots of outdoor rec., amenities--and a place that has an old New England ';feel'; to it. Any suggestions?

We love mountains and beaches equally, but need to stay in affordable housing (up to 300,000).

any help would be great.

family move

Hello Drew, If you love mountains and beaches then the Seacoast of New Hampshire is the place for you to raise your kids. You need to stay in affordable housing up to $300,000? Then this is the place! I%26#39;m looking at 2 real estate books right this minute and there are quite a few really nice homes in Exeter, NH for 300 and under, Dover Point Rd., in Dover, NH is another area that%26#39;s quite nice as well as Portsmouth, NH, Stratham or Newmarket also Durham where the University of New Hampshire is are all pretty nice places. They%26#39;re all very convenient to head north for the mountains because the highway is right within a few miles in any of these towns for 101 and 95, Boston is within an hour or so south; Manchester airport is where a lot of seacoast people head out now, instead of driving down to Boston. It%26#39;s of course getting expensive to live here like every where else, but if you do your homework you%26#39;ll find what you%26#39;re looking for. Always remember there%26#39;s a house for everyone you just have to find it, that%26#39;s all! My nieces %26amp; nephews grew up on the Seacoast and love it; they%26#39;re all really good kids in fact. I can see they%26#39;re very well adjusted and quite happy living here because of all there friends they%26#39;ve met growing up here and the things to do for them is topshelf. If you can tell I don%26#39;t have kids myself but I have really good ';role models'; coming from a huge family to observe all of this child rearing! Let me give you the websites then you can check around the seacoast for yourself. Exeter is a really nice old New England town, the famous Philips Exeter Academy is in town. The campus is absolutely beautiful. The famous Exeter Inn is right in the town not too far from the Academy. The center of town has really nice shops and very good restaurants, it%26#39;s very quaint and old time New England in the center of town! Here%26#39;s some websites for you to check out. www.nancykingstonrealty.com

www.kathywalsh.com

www.countrycrossings.com

www.BettyLaBrancheRealtor.com

www.tomfabisakrealty.com

This should help you get started. I%26#39;m looking at different property around the seacoast and you can still get something under 3. It%26#39;s not impossible! I hope you find what you%26#39;re looking for! GOOD LUCK

family move

Drew I forgot, these are really good websites to check out property too....

www.russellassoc.com

www.atrio.com

www.masiello.com

I%26#39;m looking at one right now that%26#39;s in Exeter that looks really nice. I can%26#39;t speak for the school systems where I don%26#39;t have kids but I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll be talking to people with kids and they can tell you all about the different schools. My nieces and nephews went to parochial schools all their lives, they%26#39;re in college now. They played SOCCER, BASKETBALL and SOFTBALL all through the years on the different teams. The Indoor Soccer Arena in Hampton is where the kids all play as well as the adults. There%26#39;s a lot of sports minded people on the seacoast and to me? In my opinion? Where I don%26#39;t have kids? I think that%26#39;s the key with them all, it really is! You can really really tell they%26#39;re all so focused %26amp; driven; every one of them! Again, GOOD LUCK to you and your family with your new venture!

As far as a brew-pub, be sure to go to Moat Mountain. It%26#39;s on Route 16 north of North Conway village.

  • Things to do in North Conway

We are planning a family vacation next week in North Conway with about 20 people. Any suggestions of what to do up that way? The ages range from 14 to 75. Thanks!

Things to do in North Conway

There is a great deal to do, from sedentary to active. Take aride on one of several RR trips from N. Conway. The longest ride goes up into a pretty steep-sided ravine (the name of which escapes me now). There are also a ton of outlets and stores. Plus there are a ton of mountains and hiking. There is the Cog Railway, which is expensive ($70 or more per person) but an interesting way to get up Mt. Washington. There is at least one golf course. And one can take a gondola up Wildcat. There is also icy cold lake swimming near N. Conway.

There are wonderful hikes, which is what we like to do. Mt. Washington itself is wonderful. One could also just climb up into Tuckerman%26#39;s or Huntington%26#39;s Ravines without going all the way to the (more touristy) summit. Mt.Jefferson is one of the ';easiest'; presidentials to hike because you start at the highest elevation. Mt. Adams, at a vertical rise of 4500%26#39;, is the toughest. It is wonderful to hike about tree line, but there are many smaller hikes. There will be many books in any bookstore (or outdoors stores) to get more information.

Things to do in North Conway

    Hiking in Pinkham Notch,

    Biking at Glen Trails

The Auto Road up Mt. Washington

The Cog Railway up Mt. Washington

    Visit Diana%26#39;s Bath

    Visit Jackson Falls in Jackson

    Golfing in Jackson

Factory Outlet shopping in N Conway

Picnicking at Echo Lake Stste Park

    Rock climbing at Catherdral Ledge

    the Water Slide at Attitash

    HIking, hiking, hiking

I%26#39;ve been vacationing in North Conway for 20+ years.

Aside from the aforementioned list, here are a number of other things to do:

    1. rent a tube and go tubing down the Saco river

    2. SacoBound canoe/kayak trip down the Saco River

    3. StoryLand for the younger kids

    4. Attitash - alpine slide/water slide/rock climb tower/trampoline thing/mtn biking/horseback riding/etc

    5. pony rides and excellent horseback riding at Farm by the River on West Side Road

    6. 4 golf courses in N. Conway/Jackson

    7. mini golf on Rt 16 by the outlets and 3 miles north of the village on Rt 16 (with driving range)

    8. great huge modern playground/basketball court/baseball field at Schouler Park right in N. Conway village with awesome views to the Moat Mtn range in the west

    9. Ham Ice Arena in Conway has public skating and stick practice sessions year round

    10. besides the outlets, there are a bunch of interesting shops and restaurants right in the village for browsing

    11. take in the play of the week/month at the Eastern Slopes playhouse in the village

    12. relatively small MT Washington Observatory museum in the village has a number of hands-on exhibits; not much, but it%26#39;s a cheap way to spend 45 minutes in AC

scenic drive thru the mtns along the Kancamagus Highway to Lincoln and back, or make it a 3 hour loop from Conway across the Kancamagus to Lincoln up thru Franconia notch and back down thru Crawford notch

A number of things for all ages.....

this is for DUBES and friends; most everything from A to Z for activities should be covered in the couple replies above, and that is only in the immediate MWV area.

    thanks powie

    Day Trip

Does anyone know of a good day trip for a family with three kids that we can do between Long Island, NY and New Hampshire. We are picking up a relative next month in New Hampshire and returning back to Long Island the next day. We would like to break the trip up a little and stop somewhere with the kids. Any ideas?

    Day Trip

Which area of New Hampshire are you headed towards? This would help out in where you can head to for the day..

    Lake or Pond

Hi all, I%26#39;m planning a trip to the Maine/New Hampshire region in July and am hoping to spend a day or two somewhere with a nice lake or pond to go swiming in. I%26#39;m looking for guidance and suggestions.

    Lake or Pond

Kezar Lake in Maine. One of the the most beautiful lakes around.

    Lake or Pond

You%26#39;re probably GONE already, sorry I just saw your message tonight! If you get the chance go to the Lakes region of New Hampshire. See if you can get some place to stay near Center Harbor, NH or Moultonboro! There%26#39;s a lot of shops, beaches, restaurants and things to do and see. It%26#39;s my favorite part of the whole State! Good luck! My favorite beach is the one off of Moultonboro Neck Rd., just past the Trexler Marina. It%26#39;s the prettiest and cleanest beach, I%26#39;ve found, not to mention quiet! In around Center Harbor is really nice too!

Also, in Wolfeboro there are a few public beaches with clean water to enjoy yourself, both on Lake Winnepesauke and Lake Wentworth.

Carry Beach in Wolfeboro.....the most beautiful sunsets straight out from the beach this time of year.

We%26#39;ve had to stay away from Carry Beach due to Duck Itch. We still favor Allen ';A'; or Brewster.

Are you familiar with beaches in Moultonborough ? 19 or 20 mile beach ???

  • black hair care
  • A quite NH beach & hotel

We are an English couple looking for recommendations for a quite New Hampshire beach and hotel. We want to pay approximately $130 a night and dont mind something in a village a few miles from the coast.

A quite NH beach %26amp; hotel

You may want to consider the Lakes region of New Hampshire, especially the Wolfeboro side of Lake Winnepasauke. Wolfeboro has 4 public beaches , two on Lake Wentworth. Quite, Peaceful, clean spring waterfed (warm to 72 degrees in July).

A quite NH beach %26amp; hotel

    Hello Kierans-Grandad

The Anchorage Inn in Portsmouth, NH would be your best bet for what you want to pay and also for the convenience of it; and it%26#39;s very very clean by the way! It got 3 stars online. I%26#39;ve copied the information for you below. It%26#39;s a really good location for getting to downtown Portsmouth; there%26#39;s a lot going on there at night and the drive through Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth down the New Hampshire coast is really really pretty, you don%26#39;t want to miss it! Start in Portsmouth, head through to New Castle; it%26#39;s a very pretty winding road; continue on this Route 1-A all the way and take your pick which beach that you want to spend the day at. Good luck....

    North Conway Trip Advise

We are going to North Conway for the weekend at the end of July. Any recommendations for accommodation? Our budget is around 100 dollars/room/night. Many thanks to your advice in advance!

    North Conway Trip Advise

I haven%26#39;t stayed in ANY hotels/motels in North Conway, but I%26#39;ve been vacationing here for 20+ years. There are a TON of small motels along Rt 16 from Conway Center right up and thru North Conway Village and into Bartlett. One item to consider is that there is apparently ongong construction along RT 16 as they are burying utilities underground. I haven%26#39;t been up there yet this summer, so I have no idea just how much the road is torn up and for what stretches of the main strip. Personally, I would never stay at any of the places close to the outlets on the southern end of the strip. The traffic is brutal here in both directions, and that%26#39;s without construction. All of these small motels I%26#39;m sure are probably in the $50-75 a nite range. For a non-holiday weekend at the end of July, I%26#39;m sure you could find a room without a reservation. I%26#39;ve read here on TripAdvisor that the N. Conway Grand Hotel, right by the Settler%26#39;s Green Outlet complex at the southern end of the strip, is a haven for families, with tons of kids. Green Granite Hotel, also right amongst the outlets, has a mini golf place right adjacent to it that is open well into the evening. Don%26#39;t know what degree of peacefulness you may be interested in. Holiday Inn Express and Comfort Inn are a couple more of the bigger hotel/motel facilities also in walking distance to the outlets. Like I said though, I%26#39;d try to find a place closer to N. Conway Village. One suggestion I%26#39;ve pushed on a couple of posters ( I had a booking here, but cancelled last minute when we opted to go to Wolfeboro instead) is Eastern Inns, just a stone%26#39;s throw north of North Conway Village. Check out www.easterninns.com. You can get your room there for about $100 a nite, with indoor pool/jacuzzi, and it%26#39;s a 5 minute walk to the village with all its interesting shops and restaurants and beautiful Schouler Park. Enjoy the views for me.....

  • Family accommodations near Storyland

I am looking for recommendations for a good place to stay near Storyland that has a reasonably large indoor pool and comfortable accommodations for a family of four (the kids are ages 4 and 8), price range up to about $200 per night. We will be traveling the last week of June. Thank you for your suggestions!

    Family accommodations near Storyland

There is a site called www.cyberrentals.com that will give you a list of condos in the North Conway area that may fit your needs. We used them for that very same purpose, and found a condo with an indoor/outdoor pool, rec. center. That was about a half mile from Storyland.

    Family accommodations near Storyland

We are also going to Storyland at the end of June and are staying at a condo not far from storyland that we booked through Top Notch Rentals. It is a condo with a full kitchen and a jacuzzi tub for 2. My boys are 2 and 7. We stayed 2 years ago and couldn%26#39;t wait to come back. I believe also that because we booked 4 nights, our last nights stay is free. Have a great trip!

Hello, don%26#39;t know if you have already booked your hotel, but my family and I just stayed at a place half way between Santa%26#39;s Village and Storyland. About twenty miles from each. It is the Town and Country Motor Inn. Very nice indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room. Game room and fitness room also. Great restaurant. Pets allowed. We stayed off season, $72 per night. Now I think it is around $80. Rooms have two double beds, standard stuff, but clean. Staff very nice. They did have some suites but I didn%26#39;t see those. No coffee makers in rooms so if you must have coffee first thing, bring your own. Refrigerators cost $6 extra. It is in Shelburne on Rte 2, near the lovely town of Gorham. If you go to Story land you really should see Santas Village too. They have reindeer for the first time this year. Our kids loved it. Six Gun City is near Santas Village too.

    Ann Marie

You might want to try Cranmore Mt. Lodge. It%26#39;s a very friendly little Inn that%26#39;s just outside of North Conway. The Innkeepers, Jean and Kev, are very friendly and accomodating and welcome families with children to their inn. THey have a pool and hot tub as well as a great little farm that we spent time at after Storyland.

Their web site is http://www.cml1.com. If you go, please let them know that Joe and Anne said hi.

I have stayed at the Green Granite in North Conway, a good family with indoor pool. The GG used to have nightly movies with free popcorn, which was a lot of fun for the kids after a day of shopping or amusement parks.

    http://www.greengranite.com/

I was going to stay at the Eastern Inns motel just about a quarter mile north of North Conway village, but changed bookings at the last minute. Nevertheless, they had a suite room that had a separate bedroom and a pullout couch in the living room area, I believe. Indoor pool and jacuzzi, too, I think. Walking distance to the village restaurants and shops around Schouler Park and the scenic RR train station. Huge playground and basketball court and baseball field at Schouler Park, with the most awesome backdrop view of the Moat Mtns. This place appeared to be clean and simple at a very affordable price. And kid friendly, too. Think they even have a small playground on-site. Believe the website is www.easterninns.com.

Clean affordable cottages in the White Mountains

The wife and I are looking to stay in the White Mountains in August, we`re tired of the motels we usually stay at. We are looking for a nice clean, somewhat private cottage with scenic surroundings and maybe even a view of the mountains. I have looked at just about everything on-line, but most of the websites don`t have good enough pictures to really show you what the whole place looks like and how the buildings are laid out. Has any here ever seen or stayed at the cottage at the Wilderness Inn in North, Woodstock? www.wildernessinn.com

Clean affordable cottages in the White Mountains

Mike not sure whats availible but I usually stay at a place called Sky Valley in Bartlett,NH..But you can check out the website and see if anythings up for grabs..

    www.skyvalley4u.com

Clean affordable cottages in the White Mountains

Thanks GuyfromRI, that is a very good website for Skyvalley. I was on a different site for them before but it was not as good. The only problem is there are no cottages available for the dates we will be in NH. Do you know of any other good places?

  • Age and structure of The Balsams

I would like some information on when the Balsams was built, and what materials were used to construct it. What year it actually became a hotel. I understand that it was originally a persons home. There is a hotel in Belair Fl. called the Belview Biltmore, a friend and I have a bet on which is the oldest. He claims that the Biltmore is the oldest wooden structure in the country. I always thought that the Balsams was. Any info. you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Age and structure of The Balsams

I found the history of the Balsams quite easily. Rather than rehash it here, go to www.TheBalsams.com. Click on ';about the Balsams'; in the upper left, and click on ';history'; in the first paragraph on the next page.

I don%26#39;t think either of you is correct in thinking either is the ';oldest wooden structure in the country';. I could be wrong, but I think you will find older wooden buildings in and around Boston, Lexington, Concord, Plymouth, MA. I thought Paul Revere%26#39;s house dated back to the 1700%26#39;s?

Maybe these hotels are decribed as the ';oldest continuously operating wooden hotel'; or something like that?

I used to worked at The Balsams an most of all it started being as a hotel since 1866 even thought its construction started long time before and the Belleview Biltmore started in 1897 so The Balsams is older. Also you can consider that NH (where the Balsams is located) is one of the first 13 colonies in USA

    Camping for the party type

My friends and i are looking for a campground in the lakes or white mountains regions of NH that are meant for people that DO NOT like to go to bed at 10pm and get up at 5am.

The campgrounds i have went to in the past require quiet hours starting at 10pm - but thats just when we want to be sitting around the campfire having a few beers!

Does anyone know of a place that isn%26#39;t orientated all around little kids that go to bed early and get up early?

Points for honesty - but I can%26#39;t think of a single campground that is going to fit the bill. It%26#39;s not just the little kids, some of us adults like to go to sleep at 10 PM too - especially if we%26#39;ve been up since 5 AM hiking all day.

Have you thought about a cabin rental? If you%26#39;re renting a private cabin (and some are very reasonable) you%26#39;ll have fewer rules about quiet time, etc.

Most people are heading up to the mountains for peace and quiet. Nothing wrong with having a couple of beers around the campfire, but last I recall sitting down and opening up a cold one after a long day of outdoor activities was not something that would be called noisy?

On the other hand, if you%26#39;re planning to hoot and holler, talk loud, yell and curse - maybe you could find a nice place in Kenmore Square.

    Camping for the party type

Have you considered a bluegrass festival. Maine would be best for this as they are less strict. But at a bluegrass festival the camping is included in the ticket price and the field picking doesn%26#39;t even start until 11 p.m., there are quiet areas set aside so they would ask you upon arrival if you are picking or retiring early. They are also all over NH and upstate NY. It may not be the White Mountains but its a close second and Maine is gorgeous this time of year...Good luck - and happy camping!

Search for a campground along Tripoli Rd, off Rte 93 in the Whites.

    Trip Report from Squam Lake

Just got back yesterday from a mini-vacation to the Squam Lake area and had a great time. We were celebrating our 32nd anniversary and stayed at the Manor on Golden Pond. They were wonderful! They had a complementary bottle of champagne chilling in our room to welcome us, and we had a fantastic meal the first night there (the chef%26#39;s tasting menu). There was even a special congratulatory note at the top of the menu for us. When dessert came, ';Happy Anniversary'; was written in chocolate around my creme brulee. The room was pretty and comfortable, and all the meals there were great. I do have to say that the Manor is not inexpensive, but it was well worth it, especially for a special occasion.

We went on a boat ride around the lake, where they pointed out loons and bald eagles to us and the house that was used for ';On Golden Pond';.

We also went down to Canterbury to see the Shaker Village -- very interesting and pretty place.

I definitely would like to go back to the Manor, perhaps in winter, and book a room with a fireplace. Hmmm --- maybe Valentine%26#39;s Day!

Sounds like you had fun...I also enjoy the Squam Lake area..Very nice...

Cheap and cheerful White Mountains / North Conway

Hello, we%26#39;re gonna be passing through the White Mountains on a monday in mid-august and thought we%26#39;d stop for a look round!

My USA guidebook describes North Conway as ';full of budget motel accomodation...'; Do you think it would be okay to just turn up and bag a room or should be definitely book in advance - i ask %26#39;cos this glut of cheap motels don%26#39;t seem to have a presence on the net.. other towns in the area would be fine too.

    Thanks in advance.

Cheap and cheerful White Mountains / North Conway

forgot to say - we%26#39;re off to Boston the next morning. So south of the white mountains would be okay too.

Cheap and cheerful White Mountains / North Conway

North Conway can be tricky...Sometimes you can just show up and find a room and sometimes you can%26#39;t..I would strongly suggest that you look into booking a room in advance..

But here%26#39;s a couple of sites that might assist you in finding a decent priced place to stay..

    http://www.mtwashingtonvalley.org/

I%26#39;ve stayed at Comfort Inn a few times and have gotten some good rates..But that depends on when you go and if they are running any specials.

    http://www.comfortinnnh.com/

thanks for that - i%26#39;ll investigate.

    much appreciated.

You%26#39;re right about the budget motels not showing up on the net. There are some small, simple, clean roadside motels that can be reasonable, but you are taking your chances with vacancies. Although you might just catch a piece of luck if it%26#39;s Monday.

Also check out the Holiday Inn Express in North Conway.

Best bet in North Conway: The Cranmore Inn

www.cranmoreinn.com - the place is clean, reasonable rates, great country breakfast, and the owners are super-knnowledgebale about the area. Check it out.

you can also try the Lincoln side of the White Mountains. Makes it a straight shot to Boston the next day.

  • White Mountain hiking trails

Our family is planning a trip to the White Mountains in mid-August. We%26#39;ll be staying at the Nordic Inn. Any suggestions about hiking trails, where to get the maps, some great moderate hikes (about 2 miles). Our sons are 17 and 21, we enjoy the outdoors but aren%26#39;t mountain climbers. Also, any suggestions for other sights?

    White Mountain hiking trails

Hi! If its the Nordic inn in Lincoln that you will be staying at, its a great choice!! We stayed there this past winter while skiing at nearby Loon Mountain and would go back in a heartbeat. This property has everything to offer and at the same time is laid back and comfortable. I would highly recommend a hike on the wilderness trail which is located not far from the Nordic Inn on the Kancamagus Highway at Lincoln Woods. The Wilderness trail follows an old logging railway bed. It is pretty level hiking gaining little or no elevation. about 2.3 miles in if you branch off to the left, (you will see signs and a fair amount of people on a hot summer day) you will find a natural waterslide. Our family loves to go there, its a great place to enjoy the cold mountain water, or sun on the large flat rocks.

Check out the Appalachian Mountain Club (www.appalachianmountainclub.org) - or check in the website under ';New Hampshire - Top Attractions. The AMC is the best source of maps and info for the area. You can pick up their outstanding maps and mountain guides at any outdoor retailer, or bookshops in the area.

Wilderness Trail is a good choice - try to do it mid week if you can, to cut down on crowds. More accessible trails are always more populated.

You%26#39;ll probably want to take the Kancamagus Highway - unbeatable scenery, a some interesting short hikes along the way (e.g., Sabbaday Falls). This area has a fascinating history, US ranger stations in the area are a great source of additional info.

    More hikes in Franconia Notch:

Indian Head Trail takes you to the top of Indian Head, great views for a relatively short hike (1hr 45 min)

Artists Bluff also affords great views for very little effort

Cascade Brook Trail is beautiful, lots of small cascades and falls.

Franconia Notch itself is stunning with its steep sides. Even with the Old Man of the Mountains gone, it%26#39;s still worth seeing.

For outstanding Italian food, check out Govonni%26#39;s (check my spelling). And don%26#39;t miss a chance to shop at Lahout%26#39;s. Great gear, good pricing.

Hope you enjoy your visit. Let me know if you have any questions on any of this info.

    Quiet Camping!

Can anyone recommend a campground no more then 2 hours from Boston? I need something either lakeside, beachside or anything swimmable. My boyfriend and I just stayed at Seven Maples in NH, and while the owner was really nice, the campsites were on top of eachother and we were kept up all night by drunk high school kids. Our site was also right on a main road, so between the kid%26#39;s techno music and cars driving by, we didn%26#39;t really feel one with nature. We want to try again! Help!

    Quiet Camping!

Does it have to be in NH?If not there%26#39;s also another option for ya.Thats in the Berkshires in Western Mass.There%26#39;s also plenty of great camping out there.I%26#39;ve been to a few out in that area that are great...

Check out MA%26#39;s s campground diretory here.

    http://www.campmass.com/berkshire.html

One place I stayed at that I thought was good was called Shady Pines Campground out in Savoy,MA.

But don%26#39;t let one campground get you down about that state..What you should try doing is getting a list of campgrounds in the area and have that as a back up.I do this myself. And I check out what the area has to offer.

Or how about the Cape Cod area?There%26#39;s plenty of great camping out that way.

    http://www.campmass.com/capecod.html

One place in particular that I%26#39;ve stayed that is great is called Paine%26#39;s Campground out in S. Wellfleet,MA..They have a great little area..You can check out their website at the address below...

    Quiet Camping!

2 hours from Boston? Counting traffic? Would you be willing to drive a little further, and walk a little further to ';Feel one with nature';?

Try Russell Pond, one of the White Mountain National Forest campgrounds, it has a lake, and showers of you want some amenities. Just off Rte 93, near Waterville, not a bad drive.

A couple more hours in the car could get you to Evans Notch, the uncrowded part of the White Montains in western Maine. There a a number of camgrounds along 113, and some good swimming holes, rivers, etc.

How long of a drive is it from Boston airport to Laconia...

does anyone know a nice bed and breakfast in Marthas vinyard or nantucket or boston? How far is it to drive from Boston airport and how far to Laconia?

How long of a drive is it from Boston airport to Laconia...

Sorry, can%26#39;t help with a B %26amp; B in Boston or the Islands, but if you%26#39;re heading to Laconia (this is not in the same direction as either Nantucket or Martha%26#39;s Vineyard, and you won%26#39;t even have to go into Boston proper), count on almost 3 hours from Logan Airport. Take Rte 1 to I-95 to Portsmouth, then Rte 16 (Lakes Region) to Rte 11 through Alton Bay along the west shore of the lake. My guess is about 150 miles... the traffic will vary depending on the time of day, and day of the week. A lot of people head to Lake Winnepesaukee on the weekend.

If you wanted a nice B %26amp; B north of Boston, but about 10 miles off the direct route between Boston and Portsmouth, I%26#39;d recommend the one at Castle Hill in Ipswich...

    http://innatcastlehill.thetrustees.org/

How long of a drive is it from Boston airport to Laconia...

If you need an airport close to Laconia look at flying to or from Manchester, NH. Flights are less expensive, parking cheaper, easier to get to, a better deal all around.

I second that opinion about the Manchester airport!

Although the route isboston recommended may be more scenic, if you just want to get there (Laconia), I%26#39;d suggest I-93 out of Boston all the way up to exit 20.

That way you are at highway speeds for all but the last 10 miles. Of course, at evening commute time (especially thurs and fri) highway speed may mean 10 mph between boston and manchester NH!

W/ out traffic tie-ups, I can make it from Boston to Manchester in about an hour, and from Manchester to Exit 20 (Tilton to Laconia) in about 45 minutes. Add up to an hour if hitting peak traffic.

Saves 30-60 minutes. Also, traffic on 93 is likely to mean trafic on 95 and 16 as well, so the time savings is probably similar during traffic. I must admit though, the ride is pretty dull this way.

Flying into Machester will save you 1 hour+ in drive time, probably some time getting out of the actual airport as well.

    campground in white mountains

Can anyone suggest a good campground in the White Mountains? We%26#39;ll be pulling a pop-up and require only electricity (and decent restrooms!)

    campground in white mountains

Check out the website for the White Mountain National Forest, www.campsnh.com. The WMNF has some beautiful campsites in great locations. What kind of activites are you looking for while you%26#39;re in the White Mountains? How many nights are you staying?

Does ';decent restroom'; mean showers? If so, you could look into Lafayette Campground in Franconia Notch. It is in Lafayette State Park. Nat%26#39;l Forest campgrounds have only outhouses, but well deigned and very clean, Some of the larger campgrounds have more facilites - showers, etc.

    campground in white mountains

I%26#39;ve been to many of the places in NH.One thing I love to do is camp..But you can check out the site that Northbound mentioned or you could check out.

    http://www.ucampnh.com/

For some info as well.If you go to the search for a campground section it%26#39;ll bring you up to a regions section and it%26#39;ll give you the campgrounds website (if availible) where you can read up more about the place

But to be honest I%26#39;ve never stayed at a bad campground at the many I%26#39;ve stayed at in the White Mountains area..

Guyfrom RI -- I am looking for a campground in NH -- not far from Boston -- on a lake/river (anything swimmable)-- and not overly crowded. My boyfriend and I stayed at Seven Maples in Hancock, and were kept up all night by high schoolers. We want seclusion! Any advice? Thanks!

Planning Fall Foliage Family Driving Trip

I would love suggestions from you all for routes I could take with my husband and 8%26amp;4 year old daughters. We%26#39;re going to be in New England the 1st two weeks in October. I%26#39;d love to stay in bed and breakfasts, maybe on working farms. Coming from Los Angeles, this will be a wonderful trip for the girls. Id love to find some special places to discover, maybe off the beaten track. Im not too into touristy locals. More into finding neat places they will remember visiting when they are older. I believe we%26#39;ll fly into Portland, ME and then drive throughout New England from there. Maybe VT, NH, CT, Berkshires, MA, We%26#39;re totally open. As the girls are getting older, it%26#39;ll be harder to take them away from school for two weeks. So, we want to make this trip count. Any recommendations would be great. Bed and Breakfasts, specific routes, special places to visit, food, etc. We%26#39;ll take %26#39;em all. Thanks so much! Cant wait to see what you all have to share!

Stopping over in Tamworth NH would be a great suggestion. It is south of North Conway and is a quaint little village. There are several B%26amp;Bs in town and only minutes away from great fall foilage drives and the Mount Washington Valley. We have a wonderful working farm right in the village, a small river on the edge of town and many historic buildings.

I just bumped into these awesome little maps that helped me get around NE in a scenic way.

The company makes one booklet for each state in NE and there are 7 back road routes mapped out for each.

Each map card gives you scenic back road routes with a map on one side and turn by turn directions on the other side.

These are awesome b/c each map lists the attractions you will pass on each route.

In the back of each booklet is the phone number to the attractions in case you want to visit on a whim and need more info.

I found them on visitnh.gov under things to do...there was a link to the website to the company that sells them.

I purchased mine on line at www.moto-maps.com.

    moose and bear?

Taking a 2 week New England trip early Oct from WA state; I haven%26#39;t travelled much in the past, only other trips being to Rapid City, SD and around the Pacific Northwest. I%26#39;m planning on exploring some historical sites in NH and VT, spending 2 or 3 days, probably on weekdays. Looking for advice re: making motel reservations. Maybe it%26#39;s a pretty busy time of year there at that time? Can%26#39;t wait to get there and see for myself! I like the idea of just finding lodging when I feel like it, but don%26#39;t relish the thought of sleeping in the car or on the ground (could get trampled by a moose or bear-bit)! Thanks in advance for any advice; I%26#39;ll post on VT board as well.

    moose and bear?

I%26#39;m like you, and like to wing it when it comes to lodging when I am exploring and don%26#39;t like to be too scheduled. I%26#39;m not so sure that is a good idea this time though!

Depending on where in Vermont and New Hampshire you will be going, you will likely be visiting during peak foliage season. New England is known for it%26#39;s great Fall colors and tourists flock to the area. Many motels will be booked solid well in advance. What might work a little to your advantage is that you may be there mid week. I would not count on that though.

Help in locating Romantic B & B in New Hampshire

I am needing some assistance and hoping to get some ideas from others. My parents are celebrating their 25th Anniversary and I am wanting to get them a GC to a B %26amp; B in New Hampshire. There are just so many to choose from! I am looking for a B %26amp; B that%26#39;s romantic and also located where they can go hiking, biking, shopping, etc. Any suggestions?

Take a Look at Jackson, NH. Great recreational opportunites, shopping in nearby North Conway.

Help in locating Romantic B %26amp; B in New Hampshire

Take a look at Nesslenook http://www.lmgnh.com. I have never stayed there but have been there for a visit. Very pretty %26amp; romantic. This are has plenty to do. It is near North Conway. The grounds are very pretty here also.

Call The William John Inn... it is a wonderful place for your parents to stay. check out their web site http://www.williamjohninn.com/

Try the Bernerhof in Glen. We stayed there last fall. It is great, the food is fantastic and the location is perfect.

The Beal House Inn in Littleton NH is a perfect romantic getaway. We stayed last summer/fall for the weekend. I would recommend the Notchway Suite - very quaint! It feels like you are staying in your own cottage. Also - the restaurant is outstanding, and they are going for the Guiness book of World Records for their extensive martini list/martini bar. Good Luck!

    Ditto on Jackson, NH.

I like The Wentworth Inn there. I know, it%26#39;s not a B%26amp;B, but it is an absolutely gorgeous old classic country inn, with golfing, swimming pool, great access to Mount Washington, small town feel. It would be a fabulous gift.

I highly recommend the you take a look at The Thorn Hill Inn. It is located in Jackson Village, New Hampshire. We stayed in the Grey Manor room and it was so beautiful and romantic. It had a two person Jacuzzi and gas fireplace. The service at the Inn was top notch. Everyone went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. If you select this as the place for your parents, be sure to pick a package deal that includes dinner at their restaurant. The food was fantastic!

Anyone know of where I can find some good eats in Manchester? Pricey is ok for me. -Thanks

i live in manchester so take it from a local and check out piccola italia on elm st. for italian food (authentic), CR sparks for great american fare (not downtown) or baldwins on elm (expensive but delicious!) there%26#39;s also richard%26#39;s bistro (off elm st. downtown) and good asian cuisine at places like Thousand crane on elm or tokyo and taipei on second st. If you%26#39;re on the other side of town where it%26#39;s more commercial (not downtown) there%26#39;s many chain food type restaurants (chili%26#39;s, longhorn steakhouse, cactus jacks, etc.) but i%26#39;d go downtown and check out the ones above. Well, the weather is getting nice now. You could walk dow the street to Gauchos Brazilian Steakhouse. Or, right across the street from The Verizon is a place restaurant/lounge called Cahoots. Great food there too and the fact that it is just across the street, behind the gas station.

We live near UNH in Durham, but have never really experienced New Hampshire for a summer vacation. Is there a good place we could go where I could golf, and my kids could go horseback riding? Any help would be appreciated.

    NH resident needs summer vacation

Check out Tamworth NH, a quaint small village. There are several golf courses close by and a working old fashion farm in the village. You can stay right in town at several B%26amp;Bs.

    NH resident needs summer vacation

The town of Littleton (named the 2003 Great American Main street withover 50 shops) is the spot, not only are there half a dozen golf courses within 30 minutes, there is hiking, tennis, bike trails, fishing, lakes. Horseback riding within 10 minutes of the town.

The kids will love the towns covered bridge, renovated working Grist Mill and historic museum, Polyanna,Litleton Coin Company, Village Book store (with special toy section) as well as Chutters General Store (with the world%26#39;s longest candy counter, which the kids and adults will love). There is a great Inn in town- Beal House Inn within walking distance of Main street with an award winning restaurant and Martini Bar for the adults and an accommodating chef who will adjust the menu for kids.

    Shopping Trip

    Hi.

I%26#39;m Canadian, visiting NH in Sep. for the tax-free shopping! I%26#39;ve never been, what towns/cities are best located for outlet shopping? I%26#39;m flying into Boston but don%26#39;t want to drive near the airport -- can I catch a train or something to NH and rent a car there?

Any other must-do things while I%26#39;m in the state? (my tourist book is in the mail)

    Thanks!

    Shopping Trip

Have you considered flying into Manchester, NH? If that%26#39;s not an option, you could take a bus out of Boston to Manchester or Concord NH, but the bus terminal is nowhere near the airport. You would need to take a cab or the subway. Frankly, that would be a lot more difficult than simply renting a car at the airport. If your heading north out of Logan Airport there is no need to drive into the city. You could head up Rte 1A, to Rte 95N.

Your best bet for outlet shopping is North Conway. If you%26#39;re travelling midweek the traffic is not too bad there - weekends can get very busy and create some traffic delays on the main road (rte 16). North Conway is beautifull located in White Mountains and offers great lodging and dining options as well.

Kittery, Maine is another concentration of outlet shopping, but of course you would have Maine Sales Tax.

If you do end up in North Conway, there are many sites worth seeing. The White Mountains are beautiful. What type of activities are you looking for?

Madison, NH is 15 minutes from the N Conway outlets. One hour drive from Portland,ME and two hour drive from the Manchester airport in NH. Check out the B %26amp; B %26#39;s in Madison and sleep away from the hustle and bustle. Good luck.

  • Romance in New Hampshire

    Hello,

Just wondering if anyone could offer advice/suggestion on things/places to see/do for 2 adults on honeymoon. We are thinking of going sometime between August and November.

Thank you in advance for any responses! :-)

    Romance in New Hampshire

If you are going between August and November, may I suggest September or October if you can do that. September still has some wamer days, and sun. October of course will give you peak foliage.

What kind of activites are you looking for? Hiking? Mountains?

    Fine Dining?

The Mount Washington Valley are offers superb hiking, whether day trips or longer, wonderful scenery. Classic villages - take a look at Jackson, NH. Superb inns, great locale, scenery. North Conway is nearby and offers more dining options, outlet shopping.

The Appalachian Mountain Club has lots of info on hiking, and natural wonders in the area. They have a lodge at Pinkham Notch, and a beautiful new center.

These are just broad suggestions. Can you give us some more specific questions?

    Romance in New Hampshire

Honeymoon? I thought New Hampshire was the ';Live Free or Die'; state? (sorry... just had to use that one!)

    Congratulations!

    NH breweries

Continuing on a theme here: does anyone care to recommend a brewery or brewpub or two. I have read about several in Portsmouth and New London- am curious to hear some feedback from folks who have visited there or other areas.

    NH breweries

Here%26#39;s a listing. Flying Goose is by far my favorite for beer quality. Redhook is my favortie based on location and atmoshphere.

    http://www.nhcraftbrewers.org/

Martha%26#39;s Exchange (Nashua, NH) is also missing from the list of members.

If you%26#39;re heading to Maine or Vermont, prepare yourself for some tremendous microbrews.

    http://www.drinkmainebeer.com/

    http://www.vermontbrewers.com/

    NH breweries

Thanks for responding on both threads. We look forward to checking out a few places that you mentioned. The Flying Goose is definitely on our list. When we get back from our New England jaunt in September, I will write a review of our brewery/winery experiences.

Nice little hobby you have there. If you%26#39;re visiting mid-July you can catch the VT Brewers festival on Lake Champlain. It%26#39;s up in Burlington so it%26#39;s a bit of a drive, but well worth it.

You%26#39;ll be happy with Flying Goose. Don%26#39;t be surprised if they have about 12-14 of their own beers on tap and the food in the pub is very good too, featuring some in-house smoked meats.

    Have fun.

err, just read you are traveling in Sept. so nix the Vt beer fest, I guess.

What parts of the area will you be staying in? I%26#39;ll scratch around and see if there%26#39;s any beer/wine related happenings.

Hey, KJFord, I saw you over on the Seattle forum. We were there last May- took in two Mariner games- had a GREAT time. Thanks for the heads up about the VT Beer fest- wouldn%26#39;t that be fun! We do like to check out local brews. )I bet you will do that in Seattle.) Our trip will take us from West Point, NY to Cooperstown to White Mountain Junction, VT down through NH to Ogunquit, Maine then two days in NYC- where we will catch a Yankees game. We%26#39;re Texas Ranger fans so baseball and beer play a large role in our summer/fall activities.

It just so happens that will will be attending the Summer Brewfest on Lake Washington while we are in Seattle. This is my third trip out there and absolutely love the NW.

I assume you mean White RIVER Jct., VT? If you make it up that far, you are pretty close to Long Trail Brewing Co. in Bridgewater Corners, VT. I%26#39;m going to say about 30 minutes northwest of W.R. Jct. I highly recommend them as well. They serve food and of course beer on their deck that overlooks a crystal clear stream. Watch out for the Double bag strong ale. It%26#39;s a real heavy hitter. http://www.longtrail.com/

Let%26#39;s see, Oqunquit. You%26#39;ll be too far south to hit any of the Portland breweries such as, Geary%26#39;s, Gritty McDuff%26#39;s and Sebago Brewing Co. You could check out Shipyard in Kennbunkport (just north of OGT) where Dubbya likes to summer with George and Babs. You%26#39;ll also be close to Portsmouth, which you%26#39;ll likey drive through on I-95 en route to NYC.

Good luck and feel free to e-mail me if you%26#39;d like any more recommendations or more detailed tips. kjford16@msn.com

Oh, and also Seven Barrels brewery is right down I-89 from W.R. Jct., VT in Lebanon, NH.

Well, kjford, you have given us so many good ideas and suggestions that I could see planning a trip up there in the summer JUST to visit beer related destinations! I saw you over on the Maine forum- amazing how paasionate they are about weather and relocation but only two responses about breweries/wineries. You have been a wealth of info!

And quick laugh about the Flying Goose- I look forward to checking out the Texas suasage plate.

allright, I%26#39;ll go chime in on the Maine thread. I did catch some of the back and forth on the relocating thread. In case you haven%26#39;t noticed I could chat beer all day long!

I%26#39;m not sure how ';Texan'; to you that sausage will be but I%26#39;ll bet it%26#39;s good nonetheless.

  • Keene area lodging

Can anyone advise me about a reasonable/good B%26amp;B in the Keene area? My husband and I are going up there for a Friday night stay and we don%26#39;t want to ';break the bank,'; but we love B%26amp;Bs. We don%26#39;t want to spend more than $100/night. Thanks in advance for your help!!

    Keene area lodging

We live pretty near Keene, so we have never stayed there. However, it is a lovely town with great restaurants. One of these is located in the E.F. Lane Hotel, which I think is a nice hotel.

I don%26#39;t remember seeing many B%26amp;Bs, but one I have passed right on Main Street has the following web page. It is true that you could walk down Main Street to any restaurant there. It is probably more reasonable than the Lane Hotel (which was recently redone).

    http://www.carriagebarn.com/index.htm

If you want to climb Mt. Monadnock, there are other B%26amp;Bs closer to the mountain in Jaffrey and Peterborough, NH. I have always thought that the Benjamin Prescott Inn looked lovely as a B%26amp;B.

Hope you have a great trip.

    White Xmas

    Hi Everyone,

For Xmas 2005 we would like to travel to New England and have a white Xmas. As Australians, you may know we don%26#39;t get too many down this way.

We have visited New England before in the Fall and loved it. Could some of you give us some ideas?

There will be a group (4-8) of 35-45 year olds who love a beer and wine. Don%26#39;t mind doing a bit of sking, but don%26#39;t like the crowds. Ideally we would like a cabin or appartment on a lake reasonably close to town (to stock the cooler!!), and close enough to have a ski if we want to. We would also be interested in other activities such as Snow Mobiling, Ice Fishing, or any other.

    Thanks for any help.

    Cheers GregWA

    White Xmas

    Hi Greg,

I own a lake front home that may suit your needs. It is close with 1/2 hour to 3 ski resorts. One large and 2 family mountains. It is a 3 bedroom 2 bath home only 4 years old on the lake.

    Thanks, lisa

    White Xmas

    Thanks Lisa,

Sounds like something we could be interested in. Cold you send me some more details? Maybe a website?

    vanobe_g@hotmail.nospam.com

    Remove the nospam.

    Cheers Greg

    GregWA

First, don%26#39;t be surprised if you don%26#39;t get a ';white Christmas';. Unfortunately, that happens....perhaps not as much in the White Mountain region, but at that time of year, snow can be sporadic. At any rate, I would suggest staying at the Briarcliff Motel (they have a website). Yes, it is a motel, but it is the CLEANEST place you will ever stay. Request the rooms with the porch. Nice views of the mountains. Right in North Conway, so near stores (outlets), restaurants, and beer runs! Walk next door to the Muddy Moose for casual drinks and dinner. Good beer selection. Or, order the Moose Juice! Five different flavored vodkas, soda water, and grenadine. Yum. Also close to XC skiing as well as downhill. Good hiking there in the winter....go to Pinkham Notch. Also recommended is stopping at the Mount Washington Hotel for drinks and a view. Just fantastic! Very pricey to stay there, however.

    Have fun!

    hello Greg

Try the Manor on Golden Pond in Holderness. It is within 30 miles of several ski resorts, ice fishing on the many of the lakes in the lakes region. Snowmobiling on many trails as the squam trails past the Inn. Great restaurant and cute pub.

    Close to everything.

Try the Westwind Bed and Breakfast in Hancock NH......they also have a sister Inn just up the road that I%26#39;ve heard has a groovy pub. My son and I stayed at the Westwind in the fall of 2003, great, great old house! Best country breakfast with real maple syrup straight from the neighbors yard, YUM!!! Roy and Judy run the place, and while there, my 8 year old took a riding lesson from their daughter Michele. There is a lake nearby, but I don%26#39;t know where the local ski resort/lift is. With all that snow, you could probably just hit the pub then have your friends push you down the nearest hill! hahaha Anyway, lovely tiny New England town with all the trimmings.....white steeple, town gazebo, and an awesome crusty cemetary! Rock on mates!!!

    Greg,

My wife and I live in Mass and own a business in NH. The last few years have not been very kind to those who love snow sports. The weather has been cold but not much snow. This year Mass and RI may have gotten more snow then NH. Who knows what 2005 will bring! This past week end the temperature was in the 50';s.

I would stay in the Bartlett - Jackson area near Mt Washington as it is colder and the ski resorts came make snow if need be. Also, it is usually colder for the water to freeze which is important if you go ski mobiling. You would be close to Maine for you to take advantage of their attractions ( they may have more snow). There are many inn%26#39;s, condo%26#39;s etc for all of you to stay in. Go to Jackson chamber of commerce web site and you can link to various informational sites. There are many condo%26#39;s in the area for rent. The village of jackson is very small Swiss style place that is totally decked out during the holidays-lights, snow sculptures, horse sleigh rides, wildcat river falls, great area resturants , some with music. Bretton Woods ( Mt Washington Hotel) is about 30 minutes away and well worth a look if you have never seen it. Well worth the trip.

    Greg,

If you haven%26#39;t found a place yet you can look the website my wife and I just finished the other day. We are still putting some finishing touches on it...

    www.winnisquamrental.com

I believe we have what you are looking for. We have decided to make this home a rental since we can no longer live there because of my work situation. Anyway, it is four-season (waterfront) and close to everything! (Gunstock ski resort is only 12 miles away).

Take a look if you choose. We wish you the best in your search.

    Respectfully,

    Dereck (603) 475-4416

    Hello!

I live in Conway NH, have forever! I get sick of the snow, but see how others who don%26#39;t see it very much love it, especially at Christmas! Don%26#39;t worry, we usually have some snow at Christmas time. Here are some recomendations from a local-

-Nordic Village ( I believe they have cottages) 603-383-9101

    -Sunny Brook Cottages 603-447-3922

-The New England Inn- has cottages with fireplaces-1-800-826-3466 this is very secluded in Intervale, NH, yet very close to everything. It has a well known restaurant on the premise yet is away from big crowds. You should definately check this one out!! Intervale is just north or North Conway and the NE Inn is about 5 minutes from Mt. Cranmore. There really isn%26#39;t much for cabins on the lake unless you rent privately because the lakes are all about 10-15 minutes from town and about 20-40 minutes from ski areas.

    Good luck!!

    Kelli

I live in Southern NH and there is no better place in NH then North Conway. The town is adorable with shopping, restaurants and bars. The location is perfect for winter sports. This would be a wonderful spot for you. They have nice hotels and a lot of locals rent vacation homes. As for the white Christmas, most of the time we don%26#39;t have one.

    Pittsburgh to Meredith

    Hi,

We%26#39;re planning on driving from Pittsburgh, PA to Meredith, NH in July and are looking for any advice on stops, points of interest, etc. along the way. We already did the whale watch in Provincetown and Plymouth, but haven%26#39;t been to Boston so that may be a stop.

    Any suggestions are appreciated!

    Karen

    Pittsburgh to Meredith

    JKGE,

What is your planned route from P%26#39;burgh to Meredith? Also, what are you interested in... ages, etc. That will help.

Since you will end up in New Hampshire, you will be doing day trips from there to the local attractions. I%26#39;d suggest you post this question under the forum for what states you will be traveling through. For example... if you are traveling west to east in Massachusetts, there are cultural attractions like Norman Rockwell museum, Chesterwood and Tanglewood in the Berkshires. In the Springfield area is the Basketball Hall of Fame. There is Sturbridge Village not too far from exit 9 of the Mass Pike, and Lexington and Concord are not too far from RT 128/I95 north/west of Boston. A little out of the way, as far as driving to NH goes, you could go to Rockpost and Gloucester, MA. Obviously, traveling through Connecticut or upstate New York and Vermont will give you other choices!

Have a great trip! I%26#39;m heading there myself in a few weeks!

Looking for any resorts/hotels in New Hampshire or Maine that have a kiddie pool for our little ones. Thank you.

    kiddie pool

One of the reviewers of Fox Ridge Resort said that her 40'; high daughter could touch the bottom of the pool.

But in Vermont there is Smugglers Notch. I keep looking for something better/different to take the kids but still can%26#39;t find it.

    kiddie pool

Sorry I forgot to add Steele Hill Resort which is in New Hampshire. I haven%26#39;t been to it, but the pictures look like its got a great pool for the little ones. Check out their website and intervalworld.com

    Hi, Pool...

We have a 5- and a 7-yr old who are just now learning to swim. We own a place in Waterville Valley, and have had great luck both

    - in our condo, the Black Bear Lodge -- small indoor / outdoor with a swim-under divider, all one depth of about 3.5 feet --- my son, who is about 50'; tall, is supremely comfortable practicing swimming there

    - at the White Mountain Athletic Club (in Waterville Valley), which has an Olympic-sized pool with a %26lt;4-foot shallow end, and excellent stairs for ingress, and a foot-deep kiddie splash pool.

Waterville Valley is a great place to get away, whether you ski or not. It%26#39;s in the heart of the White Mountain National Forest, literally surrounded by park land, so you feel like you%26#39;ve ';escaped'; the moment you arrive. There are numerous family-friendly activities and restaurants to choose from, regardless of the season. If you do ski (and your kids don%26#39;t, yet), I can%26#39;t compliment the WV ski resort%26#39;s ';Kids Kamp'; program highly enough -- it is very well run, and they have done great stuff with our kids over the last year.

    Hello,

Last year my mom, sister and I went to the Valley Inn and Red Fox Tavern at Waterville Valley. Reasonable prices for regulary rooms, pool definitely accomodates the little ones. They even have a reasonably priced breakfast in the morning that will appeal to fincky children.

Reason why I know all of this? My mother, sister and i made the mistake of booking their suite for a pre wedding getaway on the same weekend as the kiddie hockey tournaments were up there. While WE had a ';not so good'; time.....everyone elses kids were having a blast in the indoor outdoor pool and hot tub. And so were their parents.

    Definitely a place for families.

This would be the place for you.

    j

Red Jacket in North Conway is very child oriented ( I have 3 under 5 years and we usually stay here) Just tried the Comfort Inn and Suites in North Conway- it was great- we had the place to ourselves (we travel during the week) the pool was 3.5 to 5 feet deep, was clean and small so I felt comfortable letting the kids swim while I watched. I just booked a two bedroom suite at Luxury Mountain Getaways (owners of Nestlenook Farms and others in this ';resort'; ) in Jackson. There is an indoor/outdoor pool, sleigh rides and skating. Hopefully it will live up to it%26#39;s ad!

Family Fun in the White Mountains

My wife and I are planning a trip to the White Mountains in August. We will be travelling with two small children, ages 5 %26amp; 1. We%26#39;ve heard the White Mountains are beautiful and a great spot for the family. The only thing we know for sure is that we want to stay in a cottage with a full kitchen. As you can imagine, with two small children we are on a bit of a budget. Any recommendations on places to stay, visit or eat would be greatly appreciated.

Family Fun in the White Mountains

Check out www.skyvalley4u.com I%26#39;ve stayed there plenty of times and love it....

Family Fun in the White Mountains

Visit Storyland near Glen. Lots of family fun: small rides and even a roller coaster or two; Cinderella and her pumpkin coach, etc. Many changing tables at all rest areas; very family-friendly. One tip I got from a friend: get a ticket late one day and you will also be admitted the next day as well.

There are many hikes, most of them free. (The Flume is quite touristy and costs money.)

Drive the Kangamangus Highway between Lincoln and Conway. It%26#39;s gorgeous. If you cut north into Bear Notch and into Bartlett, you will get to Glen and skip the traffic of North Conway.

The RR rides are fun for kids too.

If you come into Bartlett stop by Moose Tracks Restaurant, very family friendly, reasonable prices, great food; it%26#39;s where the locals go.

Storyland in Glen is a must. Sabbaday Falls on the Kanc (Rt 112) is a great hike for little ones, only about 15 mins. %26amp; very easy.

Folks in Bartlett are quite friendly and eager to show off the area, ask your waitperson at breakfast for things to do %26amp; you%26#39;ll end up here for a month.

A Better Life Cabins in Bartlett might have what you are looking for.

Need insider tips for Jackson/North Conway area

I%26#39;m very much looking forward to a one-week stay at Nordic Village the end of June. Would anyone from the area be able to help me with:

Where is the nearest grocery store to stock up?

Recommendations for good pizza places, deli, etc, for take-out?

Tips on back roads that will avoid the bumper-to-bumper North Conway outlet stretch?

I%26#39;ve been to North Conway in the summer so I%26#39;ve seen how crazy that area can get!

    Thanks very much!

Need insider tips for Jackson/North Conway area

    I%26#39;ve stayed there before..Excellent choice....

But right on 302 before you get to rte. 16 there%26#39;s a store where you can buy groceries and what not to stock up on.

Another great little place to check out to eat pizza and what not is if you go down from rt 16 to 302 and take a right and go a couple of miles there%26#39;s a place called Barely There..Awesome food...

But most of the places are towards North Conway....

Need insider tips for Jackson/North Conway area

The name of the place is Bearly There not barely...

In Conway, there is a road called ';West Side Road'; that parallels 302 and connects back above of N Conway.

It is some what a challenge to find a room to rent in N Conway, try the local paper, the Conway Daily Sun. Also try the local chamber of commerce www.mtwashingtonvalley.org e-mail them and ask. Try calling International Mountain Equipment and see if they have any thing posted on their board. Bring a tent for your first few nights till you hook up!

Are there any good, affordable ethnic restaurants (Asian, Thai, Indian) that people would recommend in Portsmouth? Thanks!

  • Old Man in the Mountain?

Ok, so two of you mentioned ';the man or old man in the mountain'; and that fact that it%26#39;s no longer there. My curiosity has been peaked! What or who was the old man? I figure I%26#39;d better know the folklore if I%26#39;m visiting the White Mountains this summer.

Thanks for sharing this NH story with a Pennsylvanian,

    Doug

    Old Man in the Mountain?

    Hi Doug,

The Old Man of the Mountain was a natural rock formation perched on the side of Profile Mountain over looking Franconia Notch. The formation was such that when you looked at it from a particular angle it unmistakably took on the appearance of the profile of an old man overlooking the mountains. While you visit NH take a close look at our license plates and or our state quarter and you will see the old man there.

    He stood overlooking our state for more than 2000 years until he slid from the mountainside in May 2003. I think the words of Daniel Webster best describe how the citizens of NH felt about the Old Man ';Men hang out their signs indicative of their respective trades; shoe makers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the Mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men.';

I hope this answers your question, and have a fabulous time this summer because even though the Old Man is no longer there, the White Mountains of NH still remain one of the most beautiful places on earth.

    Jane

    Old Man in the Mountain?

Great response from Inkepa! A lot of New Englanders have grieved over the loss of this symbol. As a kid, no trip to the mountains seemed complete without a visit to the Old Man.

I stopped at the Old Man of the Mountain last fall, even though the rocks had slid from the mountain. There is a very interesting exhibit there explaining how the rock formation had fallen, and some great before and after photos. It%26#39;s a beautiful spot, just off the road in Franconia Notch. Worth a visit.

    Travel Plans

Eleven people going to Bartlett in December. Need advice on airport and transportation to Attitash Mountain Village.Should we fly to Manchester or Portland ME ? Is a shuttle available to the Village? Where are the grocery stores?

    Thanks

    Travel Plans

Fly into Manchester. From there you can head North on Rte 93. As is will be winter you will need to cross over to Rte 16 via Rte 25 through Meredith, NH. The Kancamagus High (beautiful scenbic drive) will most likely be closed if there is snow. Almost all major highways travel North-South in this region. From Portland you could take Rte 302 East to the Mount Washington area, but it is a longer drive.

You will need a rental car. There is a small grocery store in Glen, NH - not far from Attitash, and more options in Conway and North Conway. You could easily stop along Rte 16 on your way up from Manchester.

Hello! I live in Conway, right down the road from Bartlett. Manchester is about a 2 1/2 hour drive and Portland, ME is about 1 1/2 hours. Add about 20 minutes to each to get from Conway to Bartlett. You could get a local shuttle, but it would probably be much cheaper to rent a couple of cars. The shuttles are only mini vans, so you would need a couple of those, anyhow. Grants is the closest grocery store to Attitash, but in North Conway you will find Shaws and Hannaford. Have fun!!

Hi...Lived in Bartlett years ago, and travel back with our group of kiddos at least once a year...the directions and advise already given is right on, just wanted to add one thing, please try to stop by the Bear Notch Deli-Market, right there in Bartlett...you will not believe how good the subs are, or how really good the prices are, have fun...Gen

Yes very good avice already. Definitely rent a car though or you will regret not being able to explore near the resort. Also cheaper to and from airport this way. I would suggest flying into Manchester, it is a little further than Portland but a bigger airport and most flights are very inexpensive. Boston is 3 1/2 hrs away but a back up if you%26#39;re having trouble finding flights.
